We are currently hiring for a Senior Operations Planning Engineer in our Calgary AB office.
This role is responsible for evaluating Westcoast Energy’s pipeline system and proactively optimizing performance to meet strategic commercial and operational objectives. It includes leading Westcoast’s Asset System Strategy, conducting hydraulic modeling, developing operational improvements, and collaborating across multi-functional departments to drive efficiency, reliability, and increase throughput.

What You Will Do:
- System Modeling & Optimization
- Perform hydraulic modeling to evaluate pipeline performance and identify constraints, bottlenecks, and inefficiencies across the system.
- Recommend system improvements based on utilization reviews & gap analysis.
- Develop, lead and implement technically sound and cost-effective solutions.
- Operational Strategy & Support
- Review System Designs, develop operational requirements to handle off-design conditions and proposing technically-sound cases such as new modes of operation, backup compressor units, bypasses, bi-directional flow, & Pressure Control valves to accommodate all operating conditions.
- Optimize equipment design (e.g.. scrubbers, wheels, EMD, gearboxes, coolers).
- Identify, log, and resolve operating issues such as unexpected shortfalls, upset conditions, & high gas velocity.
- Develop operating procedures based on hydraulic modeling and collaborate with Gas Control to ensure quality assurance & high standards during routine and non-routine operations such as outages, commissioning & line break.
- Guide the internal organization on maintenance & improvement programs, capacity optimization, and other opportunities to enhance asset value.
- Conduct routine debottlenecking studies and champion improvement opportunities to improve system throughput.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with Gas Control, System Planning, Operations, Engineering, and Commercial to secure collaborator support for proposed changes and champion cases.
- Strategically guide and support Gas Control based on predictive hydraulic modeling & forecasted flows.
- Performance Monitoring
- Collect and trend leading/lagging indicators, analyze historical and real-time data and strategically guide Operations decision-making.
- Maximize System Capacity & Reduce Outage Impact
- Support capacity determination and outage planning to optimize outages, reduce commercial impact and continuously increase system throughput.
- Actively participate in hydraulic analysis studies, HAZOPs, design reviews and provide thoughtful recommendations to ensure all Operating and Commercial objectives are met
Who You Are:
You have:
- 7-10 years of directly related Operations Planning Engineer experience in addition having a bachelor’s degree in engineering
- Proven experience successfully evaluating technical options, conducting cost benefit analysis, presenting findings and recommendations
You can:
- Tackle complex issues based on depth and breadth of technical, operating and business knowledge while working independently, managing multiple activities and prioritizing tasks accordingly
- Show strong computer skills using Microsoft Office applications and hydraulic modeling software packages such as NextGen
You are:
- An excellent written and verbal communicator who can convey technical issues and impact to other technical and non-technical audience along with having strong interpersonal, facilitation, coordination and presentation skills
- Aware of relationships with collaborators both internal and external to the project team
The following are considered assets:
- Knowledge of natural gas transmission and/or Westcoast Pipeline System
Working Conditions:
- Work performed in a typical office environment (90%) but may require travel to field locations (10%) across North America to ensure operations and project support is delivered successfully
- Periodic time commitments outside of regular office hours may be required
