Summary of Job Duties:

The Biosafety Specialist under the supervision of the Biosafety Officer(s) is responsible for contributing to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the comprehensive Biological Safety Program for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or other appropriate fields. With three (3) years of experience in occupational health and safety, experience in biosafety -OR- Associate’s degree Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or other appropriate field. With five (5) years of experience in occupational health and safety, experience in biosafety.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and to interpret policies and procedures to solve unusual and/or difficult problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize a computer, Microsoft Office, Muse or other laboratory management system, and other software.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cooperatively with and train a wide variety of university administrators, staff, researchers, and students.

  • Demonstrated ability to wear proper PPE, including, but not limited to, respiratory protection.

  • Must be successful in obtaining security risk assessment approval as specified in the Select Agent regulations. The following individuals are ineligible to receive security risk assessment approval:

    • Anyone under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding 1 year

    • Anyone convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding 1 year

    • A fugitive from justice

    • An unlawful user of any controlled substance as defined in Section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802). NOTE: This includes marijuana/medical marijuana which is illegal at the federal level.

    •  An alien illegally or unlawfully in the U.S.

    • Anyone adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution

    • An alien who is a national of a country that the Secretary of State has decided that such country has repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism

    • Anyone discharged from the Armed Services of the U.S. under dishonorable conditions

    • Anyone involved with an organization that engages in domestic or international terrorism or with any other organization that engages in international crimes or violence

  • Must be able to receive medical clearance for respiratory protection, including N95 and powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR).


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Support management of the Federal Select Agent Program laboratory, serving as Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) and secondary contact for BSL-3 spaces.

  • Assist with institutional biosafety and compliance programs, including training development, staff education on biological hazards, and response protocols for spills or exposures.

  • Conduct inspections and audits of BSL-1, BSL-2, and BSL-3 laboratories; maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Assist in developing and updating biosafety policies, SOPs, and documentation; support staff and investigators with regulatory guidance and risk assessment.

  • Provide administrative support to the Institutional Biosafety Committee and participate in required inspections.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
