The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a highly experienced technical professional who demonstrates mastery of mechanical engineering principles through equipment design, calculations, validation and advanced problem solving. In this position, the engineer owns and drives mechanical projects and product development scopes for surface and subsea drill-through components including annular and ram blowout preventers, drilling risers, connectors and associated equipment following the applicable design and development processes to meet customer requirements and applicable codes and standards.
Beyond deep technical expertise, this role demands an elite problem solver who can navigate complex, ambiguous challenges with creativity and rigor. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to be a collaborative leader who elevates team performance, mentors colleagues at all levels, and drives cross-functional alignment to deliver innovative, reliable solutions under demanding schedules and conditions.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead the design, analysis and evaluation of complex mechanical engineering projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures and product/program requirements
- Serve as a technical authority and primary problem solver on challenging design and technical issues, applying structured root-cause analysis and sound engineering judgment to develop robust solutions
- Provide technical leadership and coordinate with analysis, materials, manufacturing and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated, optimized designs
- Championing a collaborative team environment by actively mentoring engineers and designers, facilitating knowledge sharing and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
- Lead and influence cross-functional teams to resolve organizational and technical challenges, driving alignment and accountability across stakeholders
- Interface with customers to determine design requirements, present technical solutions and provide engineering support
- Demonstrate leadership in project execution by setting clear priorities, managing competing demands, and delivering results with a sense of urgency
- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects consistent with engineering policies and procedures
- Utilize deep knowledge of applicable codes and standards (including API, ASME, BSSE) to guide design decisions and ensure compliance
- Proactively identify risks, develop mitigation strategies and drive lessons-learned processes to improve product quality and engineering efficiency
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 4 years of relevant experience)
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex, multi-disciplinary engineering problems with limited precedent or guidance
- Proven track record of technical leadership, mentorship and cross-functional collaboration
- Strong presentation and technical communication skills with both internal and external audiences
Desired Characteristics
- Product knowledge of Oil & Gas rigs, both onshore and offshore
- 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering design and development
- Experience designing pressure containing or load-bearing oil and gas equipment such as land or subsea BOPs, drilling risers, connectors, diverters, hydraulic control systems or similar equipment
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) methodologies including linear-elastic, elastic-plastic and hyper-elastic analysis
- Proficiency with industry codes and standards including API 16 series, API 6A, ASME BPVC and related specifications
- Strong understanding of material and coating types, manufacturing techniques, and quality inspection methods applicable to oil and gas equipment
- Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and lead through collaboration rather than hierarchy
- Experience leading design reviews, FMEA, risk assessments and technical gate reviews
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
