This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL (Lake Bluff, IL) location in the Transfusion Medicine, Diagnostics Division. We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
The Senior Manufacturing Process Engineer, working with little or no supervision, applies scientific knowledge, engineering knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to complete assignments related to a specific technical field or discipline. A Senior Engineer has general knowledge of other related disciplines beyond their own.
What You’ll Work On
This role focuses on executing capital projects, providing technical expertise in manufacturing operations, implementing and qualifying equipment, troubleshooting complex systems, and driving process improvements to support high-quality production.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Independently plans and executes small- to medium-sized engineering projects, managing multiple concurrent initiatives. Oversees cost, scope, and schedule controls, develops execution strategies including procurement, and prepares contingency plans for schedule or budget risks. Defines project scope with stakeholders, establishes trackable schedules, sets performance metrics, and assigns team responsibilities. Conducts economic analyses and feasibility studies to support business objectives and ensure financial targets are met.
TECHNICAL/DESIGN: Anticipates future technology needs and benchmarks best practices internally and externally. Designs and directs complex products, processes, and systems using advanced engineering theories and techniques. Leads testing with multiple variables, analyzes data, and communicates findings with actionable recommendations. Prepares plans to acquire new skills and resources aligned with evolving technologies.
PROBLEM SOLVING/INNOVATION: Delivers innovative, cost-effective solutions by integrating technical and financial data. Resolves complex interdisciplinary challenges, balances system costs with benefits, and improves designs and processes. Implements creative ideas to reduce component costs and enhance efficiency while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE: Mentors team members, shares technical expertise, and collaborates across internal teams and external partners. Prepares proposals, reports, and project documentation, ensuring clear communication at all organizational levels. Builds strong relationships with stakeholders, identifies customer needs, and adapts deliverables to meet business objectives. Represents the organization in resolving technical issues and participates in cross-functional design reviews.
COMPLIANCE: Ensures adherence to quality, EHS&E, and regulatory standards. Identifies compliance risks, evaluates potential impacts of design changes, and maintains governance requirements throughout project execution.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Develops procedures and standards, coordinates prototype and experimental runs, and directs technicians and external resources. Prepares Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), validation protocols, and safety/quality documentation. Resolves urgent production issues and vendor deviations and provides training on systems.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree Engineering, science, or closely related discipline is desired. Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Minimum 5 years experience in engineering and or operational experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters degree desired.
Has demonstrated competency within a discipline.
Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures.
Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors.
Has a technical background in health care, nutritional products, laboratory diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical, or similar industries (preferred).
Has demonstrated competency with financial systems and in fiscal control.
Has experience writing qualification protocols

The base pay for this position is
$75,300.00 – $150,700.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
