Senior Manager, Process Safety and Risk Management

The successful candidate will oversee the administration and development of the Process Safety and Risk Management program for the Pfizer Kalamazoo site in Michigan and will work collaboratively with all other supporting functions to develop and implement initiatives and solutions to ensure world class production of medicines.  Responsibilities include providing strategic leadership and guidance in achieving Process Safety, Emergency Planning & Response, and Business Continuity related performance objectives, compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, Pfizer standards and industry consensus standards, and representing the Corporation’s interests by interacting and negotiating with State and local regulators. The role will be responsible for collaborating with Site Leadership to establish and execute the Process Safety & Risk Management plan for the site.    This role reports to the Director of EHS and Security.

What You Will Achieve

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as site Process Safety & Risk Management Leader and supervise associated team members.

  • Support and develop process safety & risk management programs to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risks, and drive sustainability.  Inclusive of Pfizer standards and industry consensus standards.

  • Develop long-term strategic planning for process safety operations and emergency services, managing multiple projects including capital improvement.

  • Lead and participate in EHS audits across all company facilities and regions.

  • Lead internal gap assessments and drive continuous improvement and innovation across projects, implementing action plans and adopting best practices.

  • Develop risk assessment methods and tools, ensuring EHS management systems are communicated and improved.

  • Promote employee involvement in maintaining a hazard-free work environment and conduct related trainings.

  • Develop a high-performing talent base, foster innovation, and manage resources to deliver on strategic projects within the Kalamazoo and Pfizer at large.

  • Serves as a contact for federal, state and regional health and safety agencies for covered areas.

  • Facilitates emergency response protocols.

  • Reviews and approves accident investigations, including root cause analysis for all injuries and “near misses”; trains operations supervisors to conduct thorough investigations and root cause analysis.

  • Maintains knowledge of all applicable corporate, federal, state and local health and safety regulatory requirements. Stays abreast of developing regulatory requirements, particularly on a state and local level. Keep operations informed of new and developing regulations.

Here Is What You Need (Minimum Requirements)

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Science or EHS related field with 6+ years of experience or MBA/MS with 5+ years of experience or PhD/JD with 1+ year of experience

  • People Management expertise

  • Solid understanding of Process Safety and Emergency Planning & Response programs and key processes

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to navigate and work effectively across multiple countries and cultures

  • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory requirements and guidelines associated with biosafety

  • Detailed expertise in risk management (assessment and implementation of risk mitigation strategies).

  • Safety practitioner with broad technical and regulatory experience who can effectively work with senior management, across multiple disciplines, in a matrixed organization.

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong leadership and team-building skills

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities

  • Strong project management skills

  • Proficient in MS Office applications

Bonus Points If You Have (Preferred Requirements)

  • Experience in the Pharmaceutical industry.

  • Knowledge of MIOSHA rules and regulations.

  • Certification in recognized EHS specialties or a professional license particularly related to process safety or emergency response.

  • Ability to foster innovation and professional development within the team

  • Experience using common AI tools, including generative technologies such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot, to support problem solving and enhance productivity. Demonstrated curiosity for exploring how these tools can improve outcomes and understanding of responsible AI practices, including risk management and ethical use

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.

  • May require walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.

  • Must be able to walk and drive between site facilities on the site.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Standard work schedule, Monday – Friday, days; may infrequently require off-shift and weekend support.

  • On call 24/7.


Work Location Assignment: On Premise

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $139,100.00 to $225,100.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 17.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
