Job Summary: Design and direct the execution of the Risk Management program and initiatives to protect the Wawa Brand, provide appropriate care for associates and customers and control loss costs.  Oversee programs that have a direct impact on the Company’s total cost of risk and design initiatives to control or reduce those costs where possible.  Manage a team of subject matter experts in insurance, finance, and casualty claims.  Review and approve insurance requirements in company contracts and advise business owners on the risk presented by their contractual relationships.  Support the management of Wawa’s Captive and ensure Wawa continues to leverage the Captive for insurance needs to control costs and address lack of capacity issues in the market.   Manage relationships with brokers, carriers, and third-party administrator.

Principal Duties:

  • Develop policies and procedures related to Corporate Risk Management.  Verify proper execution of procedures through management of the insurance procurement and claims management for Wawa.  Provide recommendations to the Sr. Director, QA, Risk and Safety for total cost of risk control and reduction where possible.
  • Analyze and identify corporate risks; direct insurance marketing process; negotiate with brokers and insurance carriers for coverage and oversee the administration of the Company’s casualty liability, property hazard, and other specialty insurance programs.
  • Oversee liability reserves, letters of credit and annual risk expense budget.  Approve departmental allocation of expenses and ensure awareness of any variances to budget. Ensure accurate financial expense allocation and reporting by team.  Recommend changes in liability reserves based on results of third-party actuarial study.
  • Direct the administration of the Company’s self-funded portions of its workers compensation, general liability, automobile liability, property liability and environmental impairment liability risks.  Determine when appropriate to place insurance carrier on notice of an event that could exceed the Company’s deductibles or self-insured retention.  Authorize settlements and strategy plans for large loss claims.  Oversee the handling of claims above the Company’s deductibles or self-insured retention.  Ensure Wawa’s Claim Philosophy is being met and assess for changes as needed with market or company changes.
  • Conduct review and analyses of current property and casualty liability programs.  Assess results against corporate financial needs, goals and risk tolerance levels and prepares recommendations for senior management’s or business owner’s review.  Benchmark corporate costs with peer organizations to maximize market opportunities. 
  • Design and direct execution of claims management initiatives to protect the Wawa Brand, provide appropriate care for associates and customers and control loss costs.  Partner with Wawa Safety team to share trends and data and support initiatives to prevent future claims activity.  Leverage loss control agreements with insurance carriers to utilize third parties in support of Workplace Safety initiatives.
  • Manage relationships with third party vendors to ensure program requirements and performance guarantees are being met.  Negotiate price, services and performance guarantees with vendors.  Keep vendors informed of changes and initiatives of Wawa to ensure their understanding of our company’s goals, expectations and performance.  Market Wawa to insurance carriers as part of insurance marketing process. 
  • Direct insurance requirements for the Company and third-party vendors included in contractual agreements and leases.  Partner with Legal and business owners across the Company to ensure compliance is being met.  Review and modify insurance requirements based on changes in the market, our exposures, and types of services included in the contracts.
  • Support the management of Wawa’s Captive  and ensure Wawa continues to leverage the Captive for insurance needs to control costs and address lack of capacity issues in the market.  Identify areas of Wawa’s risk transfer program where there could be benefit in using the Captive in place of the commercial markets and share with the Captive Executive Committee and Board. Partner with Wawa’s Captive Management Company and internal Executive Committee to  support the day to day management of the Captive.
  • Provide overall direction and support for team and monitor and assess individual work in accordance with high standards of excellence.  Provide feedback, coaching, support, opportunities for development, complete performance appraisals, take corrective action when appropriate, and participate in hiring decisions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or risk management preferred  
  • 7+ years of experience working in risk management or insurance
  • 7+ years of management experience
