The Ocean Procurement team is a foundational piece of our ocean freight business.

Grow Flexport’s Ocean Freight business and diversify its portfolio.

The Opportunity:

The Ocean team at Flexport works globally to make sure all business moves smoothly and our ocean product is the best it can be for our clients.  Our Ocean Freight Team is essential to winning new business, supporting all current business, and building out the future of Flexport’s ocean services. 

As a Senior Manager, Ocean Freight you’ll be an integral part of helping achieve Flexport’s growth goals. It’s a face-paced and integral position for both winning new business, and supporting our current book of business. This role is what we refer to as “ROM” internally, our Regional Ocean Management team. This role is focused on managing the booking of business for Southeast and Mid-market. A successful ROM will be willing and able to operate across the ocean market (TPEB, TAWB, Exports) to grow volume and increase yield for their book of business. The ROM is responsibility for managing relationships with clients and Demand, working directly with procurement, and engaging directly with Ocean carriers when needed.


You Will:

  • Manage a sizeable Ocean P&L for your district through scaling volume and increasing yield for the the Southeast and Mid-market 
  • Be the market expert and support the commercial organization with market-specific intelligence, trade idiosyncrasies, and directly interfacing with customer
  • Help design products and generate customized go-to-market strategies for customers, from business development to pricing  
  • Own tenders and RFQs for your district to secure regional and global customers, including tender management, implementation, and ongoing NAC management. 
  • Interface with procurement teams to drive profitable business, identify growth opportunities, and capture market-specific knowledge
  • Identify and drive improvement in go-to-market, operational, and financial processes 
  • Build and own P&L review and actively participate in book of business growth rhythms
  • Use data to drive decisions
  • Contribute to product development tools that impact the ocean business, from DCRS to NAC allocation tool, CPO, etc. 
  • Join on a regular basis client calls and webinars
  • Lead regular cross team meetings in your region for Ocean FCL, and quickly tackle demand questions and escalations as arise in Slack
  • Build and maintain relationships with a portfolio of partner carriers (Account Executives, Senior Leadership in country/global)
  • Drive all financial health levers for your district including quoting, invoicing, and dispute escalation
  • Manage a team of budding market experts who will drive customer strategies, monitor financial health indicators, and drive book of business growth initiatives 
  • Work across Procurement, Pricing, Planning, and District Management teams to deliver globally optimized results to the Ocean P&L

You Should Have:

  • 7+ years of prior Ocean Freight experience at a top freight forwarder or carrier or 7+ years of supply chain experience and a BA/BS Degree;
  • Strategic vision and ground floor execution;
  • Bias to Action, Process, Structure and Data;
  • Ability to work within Excel, Looker, Winmore. 
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
  • An obsession with client happiness. You succeed when they succeed;
  • Ability to travel regionally;
