The Position

Senior Manager, Medical & Scientific Affairs Field (Cardiometabolism & Neurology)

The Opportunity:

The Senior Manager of the Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA) field team is a national leadership position within US MSA, responsible for the leadership, development, and daily management of the regionally field-based MSA team supporting an assigned diagnostic portfolio/disease area(s).

Core responsibilities are focused on providing field team coaching to a team of Medical Scientific Liaisons and/or Pathologists, as well as direct external engagement with key  stakeholders in order to optimize medical insight gathering, foster scientific collaboration, and deliver valuable medical education. The Senior Manager ensures MSA field activities are in alignment with medical strategy by translating strategic priorities into actionable plans for the field and monitoring progress.

The Senior Manager is responsible for operational excellence of the field teams, including refining processes and tools to maximize value and minimize inefficiencies. Furthermore, the Senior Manager will champion a culture of scientific excellence and continuous learning within their team and across the broader organization, fostering an environment where innovation and patient-centric solutions thrive.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Coaching & Development: Provide continuous coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to direct reports; actively drive development plans to enhance impact and support career growth. Identify and cultivate future leaders within MSA and the broader Roche organization.

  • Resource Planning & Allocation: Strategically deploy MSA field resources across a dynamic portfolio, prioritizing high-impact areas. Lead comprehensive succession planning for key field and leadership roles.

  • Training & Capability Building: Assess capability gaps and lead targeted training initiatives to strengthen scientific expertise, communication skills, and cross-functional collaboration within MSA.

  • Culture Leadership: Champion a culture of high performance, accountability, inclusion, and innovation across the MSA field organization.

  • Medical Strategy Alignment: Translate medical strategy for assigned portfolios or disease areas into actionable field plans with clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and strategic alignment.

  • Territory & Execution Planning: Guide field teams in developing optimized territory plans that balance external stakeholder engagement with medical strategic priorities.

  • External Engagement: Drive medical engagement with key national accounts and large reference laboratories, fostering scientific exchange and collaboration. Build and maintain a robust network of external experts to generate insights that inform medical and scientific strategy.

  • Field Operations & Insights: Enhance field tools and systems to improve insight collection and utilization. Deliver timely metrics and analytical reports to inform strategy, identify trends, and optimize field effectiveness.

Who You Are:

  • 2+ years people or other related leadership experience AND Bachelors Level Degree in Science + 7 years relevant work experience; OR

  • Masters Level Degree in Science + 5 years of relevant work experience; OR

  • PhD in Science + 2 years relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical Customer-Facing Experience: Strongly prefer candidates who have held field-based Medical Scientific Affairs roles previously  (e.g. MSL). Diverse experience across various Medical Affairs functions, including medical strategy and/or operations is an asset. 

  • Diagnostic Industry or Laboratory Clinical Expertise: Valuable experience includes prior knowledge and experience with in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) in industry, R&D, healthcare/clinical laboratory setting. Previous experience in cardiometabolism or neurology is preferred.

  • Cross-Functional Field Function Acumen: Experience within other customer-facing roles in other industry functions (e.g. sales, corporate accounts, service) an asset 

  • Inspirational Leadership & Alignment: Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and align cross-functional teams to strategically address opportunities within a matrixed organization. Previous formal people leadership of 3+ years preferred. 

  • Established External Relationships: Preferred candidates will have established relationships with a diverse range of key external stakeholders and a demonstrated ability to drive collaborative initiatives and drive shared strategic objectives. 

  • Exceptional Communication Skills: Demonstrated excellence in both written and oral communication, with the ability to skillfully adjust messaging and content to meet the needs of diverse audiences. 

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and decision-making: Demonstrated ability to navigate and lead through change and ambiguity, effectively adapting strategies and approaches in dynamic environments. Capacity to take sound decisions with incomplete information, manage multiple competing priorities, and guide teams through uncertainty.

Location: This is a field-based position that can be located anywhere in the U.S.; however, Indianapolis, IN is highly preferred.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Indianapolis, IN is $154,000 - $286,000.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
