About the role

Our Learning & Development team helps people build the skills they need to do great work and grow their careers. We focus on practical, relevant learning that supports HL’s goals and gives colleagues the confidence to adapt and succeed.

The Senior Manager of Learning & Development is responsible for leading the operational delivery and continuous improvement of HL’s skills strategy, delivered through a responsive and high-impact learning and development offering. The role ensures HL has the right capability in the right place to achieve its strategic goals, enabling a workforce of high-performing individuals.

This role is instrumental in ensuring HL attracts, engages and retains talented individuals who thrive in an environment where they can develop their careers. It manages the design, development, delivery and evaluation of learning resources and experiences, grounded in a deep understanding of HL’s business priorities. All learning provision is tailored to specific organisational needs, agile in its delivery, and aligned to strategic workforce planning.

A key focus of the role is to evolve the learning function by building internal capability in the assessment, creation and curation of learning content—reducing reliance on external providers and embedding a sustainable, scalable model for learning delivery.

The role also oversees the business-as-usual management of HL’s digital learning infrastructure, ensuring they remain fit for purpose and continuously evolve to meet the needs of the organisation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own the operational delivery of HL’s learning and development offer, ensuring it is responsive to business priorities and aligned with the organisation’s skills strategy

  • Lead and manage a team of L&D professionals, fostering a high-performance culture and supporting career development and skills growth within the team

  • Lead the transformation of the learning function, leading the in-sourcing of content creation and curation to reduce reliance on external providers and embed a sustainable delivery mode

  • Lead the transition of HL to become a more ‘skills based’ organisation in the way we identify, develop and mobilise skills across the organisation

  • Act as a learning ‘business partner’, collaborating with the Talent & Careers, DEI, HR and business area teams to ensure HL’s learning offer supports solving critical business needs

  • Investigate, design, deliver and evaluate learning resources and experiences that are tailored to HL’s strategic workforce needs and grounded in a deep understanding of business context Confidential

  • Critically evaluate the business-as-usual management of HL’s digital learning infrastructure, including the LMS and eLearning platforms, ensuring they remain fit for purpose and continuously evolve

  • Use data and analytics to monitor learning effectiveness, generate insights and inform continuous improvement of the L&D offer

  • Stay informed of external trends and innovations in learning, bringing fresh thinking into HL’s learning strategy and delivery

About you

You’ll ideally have experience of leading a high-performing Learning and Development team, with a passion for progressive transformation in how to diagnose, design and deliver training needs across an organisation.

Essential:

  • Expertise in content curation and creation, with a strong portfolio of internally developed learning resources across digital and blended formats

  • Demonstrated success in in-sourcing learning provision, building internal capability and reducing reliance on external vendors

  • Strong understanding of skills-based workforce planning, with experience in transitioning to a skills-based organisation

  • Experience acting as a business partner and/or consultant, working with business functions to diagnose business issues

  • Advanced data literacy, with the ability to use learning analytics to generate insights, measure impact and inform continuous improvement

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence across multiple levels and functions

  • Experience leading and developing L&D teams, fostering a high-performance culture and supporting career growth

Desirable:

  • Experience in a regulated or complex organisational environment, preferably within financial services
