About the Role:

Provides strategic and operational leadership for physical security programs across the organization, with primary accountability for campus security operations and global systems and processes for security programs. This role establishes operational objectives, develops multi-year security process and systems roadmaps, and leads the execution of security initiatives through internal staff and third-party partners. The role manages the contract for external services for guard services and ad hoc security services.

The Senior Manager leads the operational security function and execution of enterprise security programs. Ensures enterprise-wide alignment of security systems, incident management, emergency response, and threat mitigation in partnership with Information Technology, Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, and Facilities. This position serves as a key advisor to Facilities leadership and cross-functional partners on physical security risk and plays a key role in protecting employees, assets, operations, and corporate reputation.

Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):

  • Establishes operational objectives, work plans, and performance standards for the security function; leads execution through internal staff and third-party partners and evaluates outcomes against defined goals.
  • Contributes to the development and leads execution of the global physical security strategy aligned with company objectives, ensuring scalability beyond the San Diego campus to support multi-site, international operations, and field-based employees.
  • Leads operational planning and execution of the enterprise security systems roadmap in partnership with IT, including access control, video surveillance, monitoring platforms, integrations, lifecycle planning, cybersecurity alignment, and long-term capital planning.
  • Oversee Security Operations Center activities and ensure appropriate monitoring, escalation, and response protocols for alarms, incidents, and emerging threats.
  • Serves as contract owner for the external security services provider, including vendor selection support, contract oversight, KPI development, performance management, staffing models, and financial accountability.
  • Leads development and delivery of field security capabilities, including proactive travel risk management and support for employees operating in elevated risk environments and tools for emergency notifications.
  • Oversees security-related investigations and incident management processes, ensuring structured documentation, evidence handling, appropriate escalation, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Manages all security incident documentation in partnership with Human Resources, ensuring consistency, confidentiality, and compliance with company policies and regulatory expectations.
  • Leads enterprise emergency response planning and coordinates security systems and personnel in support of emergency operations in partnership with Environmental Health & Safety and Human Resources.
  • Partners with IT and HR on workplace violence prevention, physical threat monitoring, and implementation of detection, reporting, and response protocols.
  • Establishes and manages annual operating and capital budgets for the security function; ensures adherence to financial targets, project timelines, and resource allocation plans.
  • Develops and implements security policies and procedures impacting multiple sites and supports broader company policy development. Provides leadership, coaching, and development for security personnel and contract teams; builds capability, accountability, and succession depth within the function.
  • Ensures confidentiality and appropriate handling of sensitive information, including personnel, investigative, and security-related data.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma and 8+ years of progressive experience in physical security, investigations, protective services, or public safety environments, including significant leadership or functional management responsibility within a corporate, life sciences, healthcare, or similarly regulated setting.  Law enforcement background, preferred.
  • BA or BS highly desired. Degrees in fields such as criminal justice, homeland security, emergency management, business administration, or organizational leadership preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated people leadership or functional management experience is required.
  • Requires broad and in-depth understanding of physical security operations, investigations, emergency response coordination, and enterprise security systems.

  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of how the security function integrates with Facilities, IT, Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, Legal, and other stakeholders to achieve business objectives.

  • Works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives and risk tolerance.

  • Uses critical thinking, analytical judgment, and structured decision-making to implement solutions aligned with company strategy.

  • Acts as a senior advisor and escalation point for complex or sensitive security matters.

  • Demonstrates strong vendor management and contract oversight capabilities.

  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence outcomes across multiple departments.

  • Exercises discretion and sound judgment when managing sensitive, confidential, or high-impact matters.

  • Strong communication and leadership presence when engaging with senior leadership.

  • Extensive experience managing access control systems, CCTV platforms, monitoring systems, and integrated physical security technologies.

  • Experience owning or managing third-party security service contracts and performance standards.

  • Demonstrated experience overseeing investigations, incident management, and structured documentation processes.

  • Experience developing emergency response programs and coordinating cross-functional response efforts.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.

  • Proficiency with standard office software and electronic security systems.

  • Holds and maintains a valid driver’s license.

The annual base salary we reasonably expect to pay is $143,600.00-$196,000.00. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as primary work location, complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus with a target of 30% of the earned base salary and eligibility to participate in our equity based long term incentive program. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan (with company match), paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
