The Aircraft Certification and Flight Testing team is looking for a highly motivated Senior Engineering Manager for their Electrical / Mechanical Design Engineering team. This individual will lead a multidisciplinary design team responsible for the development, modification, certification, release, and continuous improvement of electrical and mechanical aircraft systems and components. This role manages engineers and designers, sets technical direction, drives execution against cost, quality, schedule, and certification targets, and works cross-functionally with quality inspectors, engineering focals, regulatory agencies, and customer stakeholders. 

The ideal candidate is a strong people leader with solid technical depth, sound engineering judgment, and experience turning business requirements into practical, repeatable, and certifiable design solutions. Experience supporting Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) programs, including design, documentation, testing, and regulatory coordination, is strongly preferred.   

This is an onsite position based at the Eastern Iowa International Airport (KCID) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

 

What you will do: 

  • Lead, develop, and supervise a team of electrical and/or mechanical design engineers, designers, and technical staff. 
  • Oversee electrical and mechanical installation design from concept through prototyping, validation, certification, and releasing aircraft level drawings. 
  • Lead or support engineering activities associated with Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs), including design changes, substantiation, compliance documentation, testing, and certification support. 
  • Establish engineering standards, design practices, and documentation requirements. 
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective actions related to design, field issues, certification findings, and product performance. 
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, documentation quality, and team performance. 
  • Participate in budgeting, staffing, hiring, performance reviews, and employee development. 
  • Lead and demonstrate a Safety-First culture behavior. 
  • Use your strong written and verbal communication skills to keep all levels of the organization and our customers informed and up to date. 

Education & Experience you must have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
  • U.S. Person – Military contract stipulates the candidates must be U.S. Persons.

Qualifications you must have:

  • Experience supporting Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) projects, including engineering documentation, testing, certification coordination, and compliance support. 
  • 5+ years of progressive engineering design experience to include engineering fundamentals, design controls, and structured problem-solving methods.
  • 2+ years of leadership, supervisory, or team lead experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple concurrent priorities. 
  • Experience managing design work in aerospace product/systems development or aircraft modification environments. 
  • Experience with engineering documentation, change management, and release processes. 
  • Experience with CAD and engineering software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, CATIA, or similar, depending on team focus.

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
