The Senior Mainframe Programmer serves as a Programmer in support of the mainframe programming environment. As a Programmer he or she will deliver high quality and complex mainframe programs through development of new application programs/systems and system upgrades to existing programs/systems. This is accomplished through in-depth design and application development using COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO, Z/OS. Performs, leads, and audits all activity within the designing, developing and delivery of new systems and/or enhancements to existing code. Works with internal staff, customers and other technology teams to create technical requirements for developing software solutions delivered through the mainframe operation. Ensures the creation of system technical documentation and the effective communication with business partners to understand the business requirements and align the business priorities with the programming work schedule. Researches and evaluates new software programs and/or software tools for inclusion in the operation.

This position will be with National Indemnity Company in Omaha, Nebraska and will be a hybrid work schedule of 50% in the office at our Corporate Headquarters.  Sponsorship is not available for this position.  

What will you do?

  • Serve as a Programmer in support of the mainframe programming environment.

  • Deliver high quality and complex mainframe programs through development of new application programs/systems and system upgrades to existing programs/systems.

  • Complete in-depth design and application development using COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO, Z/OS.

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information-technology or related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 5+ years related work experience.

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, etc.)

  • Knowledge of software development practices and procedures

  • Experience working in application lifecycle management tools such as DevOps, JIRA, or Rally

Who would excel in this role?

  • Some who has experience with DB2, XML, SQL, and Visual Studio.

  • Someone who has Insurance industry knowledge.

  • Someone who has Project Management knowledge.
