The Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub was established in 2016 as a strategic university initiative in partnership with industry and government. Building on an initial seven-year $12 million collaborative investment with Optus, the Hub is now widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading and globally respected cyber security research and development centres. It brings together multidisciplinary expertise across computing, data science, artificial intelligence, law, and the social sciences to address complex and emerging cyber security challenges. The Hub is home to the Information Security and Privacy Research Group, one of Australia’s premier research groups in privacy-preserving technologies, with internationally recognised contributions to data security, AI security and privacy, human-centric security, and cyber-physical systems protection. It has secured substantial competitive national and international research funding and maintains deep, sustained partnerships across government, defence, critical infrastructure, telecommunications, financial services, and global technology sectors. A defining strength of the Hub is its strong translational and industry engagement focus, leading multi-million-dollar collaborative programs that convert research excellence into deployed capability and measurable impact. This includes the development of advanced AI-driven security technologies and the creation of Apate.AI, a multi-award-winning university spin-out combating global phone scams. The Hub plays a central role in advancing cutting-edge research, shaping cyber security policy and practice, and strengthening Australia’s national and international cyber security leadership.
