The Senior Lead, Technology Risk and Control Officer play a key role within Northern Trust’s Global Technology organization, supporting a strong First Line of Defense and a control‑aware culture. This role is responsible for leading the identification, assessment, and oversight of Emerging Technology risks, including those related to artificial intelligence, cloud, SaaS, data‑driven platforms, and evolving technology architectures, to support secure, compliant, and resilient technology solutions.
The Senior Lead serves as a trusted risk partner to Technology and Cybersecurity teams, driving effective emerging technology risk identification, risk assessments, and control oversight, and contributing risk insights to issue management and risk treatment decisions. This role supports strong governance outcomes, regulatory readiness, and the continued evolution of technology risk management practices across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Risk & Control Oversight
Lead and oversee the planning and execution of emerging technology risk assessments, including evaluation of risk drivers, control design, and operating effectiveness across AI, cloud, SaaS, data, and cybersecurity domains.
Assess whether controls supporting emerging technology use cases are appropriately designed, clearly documented, consistently executed, and supported by complete and reliable evidence.
Identify emerging and systemic technology risks, clearly articulating root cause, impact, and risk implications to senior stakeholders.
Risk Assessment & Stakeholder Partnership
Serve as a risk advisor to technology leaders, architects, control owners, and process owners, providing practical, risk‑based guidance to strengthen control maturity and manage emerging technology risks.
Influence risk decision‑making by delivering balanced risk assessments that consider business objectives, regulatory expectations, and evolving technology adoption.
Build strong partnerships across Technology, Cybersecurity, Architecture, Compliance, Enterprise Risk Management, and Audit to ensure consistent risk identification and oversight.
Risk Oversight, Issues & Governance
Lead and support oversight of emerging technology risks through the technology risk treatment lifecycle, including risk identification, assessment, approval, and monitoring of remediation or acceptance decisions.
Oversee emerging technology‑related control issues, ensuring timely remediation, appropriate escalation, and readiness for validation and audit review.
Support preparation of risk materials for governance forums and committees, including senior management and risk committees.
Regulatory, Audit & Assurance Support
Play a key role in regulatory exams, supervisory interactions, internal audits, and independent risk assessments related to emerging technologies, ensuring well‑coordinated responses and high‑quality evidence.
Proactively monitor emerging technology regulatory developments and assess their impact on technology risk and control expectations.
Qualification and Experience
10-12 years of experience in Technology Risk, Cyber Risk, Cloud Risk, or related disciplines, with demonstrable enterprise‑level accountability.
Exposure to AI systems, cloud platforms, and complex digital architectures within regulated environments is a plus
Professional certifications such as CISSP, CCSK, CRISC, or equivalent preferred
