Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Laboratory Technology Specialist at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, based in our Evanston, IL office.

The Senior Laboratory Technology Specialist supports and enhances key laboratory digital systems, including Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN), and related digital technologies, while also serving as a technical expert for the broader laboratory technology ecosystem. This role partners with laboratory scientists, operations, and IT to ensure workflows and data structures are accurately documented and effectively translated into system solutions. Serving as the product owner for laboratory platforms, the Specialist leads continuous improvement, integration, and digital transformation initiatives across the organization.

What you’ll learn and achieve:

As the Senior Laboratory Technology Specialist, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Administer and manage LIMS, ELN, and related laboratory applications, including user provisioning, license management, system configuration, and service/incident resolution.

  • Provide expert support to users in creating, modifying, and troubleshooting digital workflows, ingredients, recipes, data structures, and processes within laboratory systems.

  • Serve as the product owner for laboratory platforms, overseeing upgrades, enhancements, integrations, roadmaps, and vendor partnerships while staying current on emerging technologies and best practices.

  • Partner with laboratory scientists, operations teams, and IT to ensure optimal system performance, seamless integration, and strong user support.

  • Develop and maintain process maps, data flow diagrams, and documentation that define user requirements, automation logic, system dependencies, and data standards.

  • Ensure system-wide analytics, dashboards, and reporting tools are accurate, timely, and aligned with organizational needs.

  • Plan and execute system upgrades, patches, enhancements, and integrations with enterprise applications and data systems.

  • Create and maintain training materials, user guides, and onboarding resources to support laboratory staff in adopting and effectively using digital tools.

  • Identify, prioritize, design, and implement opportunities for digital process improvement, automation, and workflow optimization across the laboratory ecosystem.

  • Uphold data integrity, quality, and security standards across all system administration, development, and documentation activities.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Strong knowledge and experience in LIMS, ELN, or similar SaaS laboratory applications (Uncountable).

  • Strong knowledge of digital workflows, data management, and process mapping.

  • Familiarity with analytics, dashboarding, and reporting tools (PowerBI). 

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in collaboration with IT and laboratory stakeholders using enterprise ITSM tools. 

  • Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages is a plus. 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft technologies (Azure, Power Automate, SharePoint, Power Platform). 

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills across technical and non-technical audiences. 

  • Collaborative and team-oriented, capable of facilitating discussions between scientists, operations, and IT professionals. 

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. 

  • Commitment to continuous learning and digital enablement of scientific operations. 

 Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Chemistry, or a related field.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in laboratory, IT, or digital systems roles, with direct experience administering LIMS/ELN or SaaS applications preferred.

  • Experience supporting laboratory digitalization initiatives or LIMS implementation.
