ERM is hiring an onsite Senior Health and Safety Specialist to provide safety leadership, technical oversight, and regulatory guidance within a high‑risk, complex, and strategically expanding operational environment in Poughkeepsie, NY. This is a full time (40 hours per week) limited term role with a duration of 12 months, extendable.
Responsibilities
- Uphold all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, consensus standards, and corporate requirements.
- Collaborate with research, manufacturing, cloud and quantum engineering, facilities, and operations teams to design and validate safe work processes.
- Provide safety oversight across laboratories, chemical operations, facilities infrastructure, office areas, and heavy construction projects which may impact workers (including solar installations).
- Provide technical coverage for multiple research and operational sites, including support across manufacturing, research laboratories, development laboratories, data centers, docks, storage facilities – (and more) for those locations.
- Track emerging and existing legal, regulatory, and consensus standards relevant to all site operations.
- Review operations, documentation, and records against thousands of applicable standards.
- Report and assist operations in resolving safety and health non‑conformities with business options and technical IH/Safety insights.
For the Senior Health and Safety Specialist position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $103,973 – $130,886, $49.98/hr – $62.92/hr USD, limited-term, non-exempt. An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where employee’s fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/Flexforce employees are NOT bonus eligible).

- Ensure scientific research experiments, equipment, and infrastructure are designed to operate safely and legally.
- Develop engineering, administrative, and PPE controls to prevent significant exposures.
- Evaluate and authorize research experiments and operational activities involving hazardous materials and high‑risk processes.
- Translate complex risks into clear, actionable guidance for workers and operational leadership.
- Perform ongoing inspections across all departments, including labs, facilities, construction, contractors, and IH monitoring. Includes the innovative creation of electronic opportunities for performing and reporting audit results associated with strategic (proactive) identification of potential H&S trends and opportunities.
- Represent the corporation during OSHA, Department of Health, RBA, and third‑party inspections.
- Create long‑term safety strategies for complex, high‑risk environments with large, diverse workforces.
- Define legal standards, policies, guidelines, and strategic direction for regional safety programs. Includes the creation and update/improvements for hundreds of associated webpages.
- Create and deploy safety training tailored to site hazards and regulatory requirements. This includes the management and review of training annually to validate effectiveness and applicability for the operations which exist.
- Identify hazards, assess risks, and develop mitigation plans. Includes performing qualitative as well as quantitative exposure assessments.
- Deploy expertise across multiple locations and business units (Cloud, Quantum, Research).
- Evaluate worker activities for compliance with safety requirements.
- Develop systems, tools, and controls that enable safe and compliant operations – that adhere to client and GRE focus areas and processes – and improve productivity.
- Lead response to high‑risk or urgent safety circumstances including the communication, negotiation and mediation of situations.
- Analyze operations and recommend improvements to reduce risk and increase efficiency – including the cost benefit analyses.
- Provide expert counsel on safety strategy, risk, and compliance to employees, management and leadership.
- Design safety precautions for confidential or proprietary initiatives.
- Prepare operations for external inspections and audits such as comprehensive OSHA VPP and RBA, HSMS audits and recertifications.
- Track and report safety performance metrics for internal and external stakeholders.
- Evaluate new and existing operations for risk.
- Review operations and grant approvals for hazardous materials and equipment – in order to minimize worker exposures.
- Provide oversight and root‑cause analysis for incidents.
- Manage safety programs, records, and compliance documentation.
- Assist with emergency response planning and drills.
- Set site‑specific safety goals and improvement strategies.
- Deploy expertise to any location or operation requiring support.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering or related degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10+ years’ experience performing health and safety responsibilities.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and develop actionable solutions.
- Experience designing and implementing exposure controls and workplace health programs.
- Proven leadership in multi-work environments and perhaps geographical legislative requirements, with the ability to influence across functions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder‑engagement capabilities.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001, corporate management systems, and regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to mentor others, lead projects, and drive continuous improvement.
