Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Grants Accounting, the Senior Grants Accountant is responsible for maintaining continuous compliance with federal, state and industry requirements for accurate and timely reporting on expenditures of funds for a portfolio of assigned grants. This position is directly responsible for managing and coordinating daily post-award financial accounting and reporting and ensuring compliance with accounting procedures and controls. This includes accounting, billing, receipting, reporting, and ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulations, sponsor/grantor requirements and Foundation activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and coordinate the monthly grant financial close process ensuring accurate financial results and requirements are complete within timelines.

  • Evaluate the Grants Accounting policies and procedures control systems with the Director to improve effectiveness and compliance.

  • Review and perform general ledger grant account reconciliations.

  • Prepare audit schedules, including those for the annual audit and the schedules of expenditure for Federal and State awards during the Single Audit, prepare Facilities and Administrative schedules.

  • Manage assigned portfolio of grants.

  • Monitor restricted and sponsored award accounts for reasonableness, allowability, allocability and consistent treatment of costs and initiate corrections as needed.

  • Determine the difference between exchange and non-exchange transactions as well as appropriate revenue recognition.

  • Cross-train with the Director and serve as back up in their absence.

  • Oversee and review the grant financial account statements to ensure accuracy, and reconcile general ledger accounts.

  • Assist in the monitoring of grant related transactions to the general ledger making appropriate adjustments; assist in managing the supporting tables within the finance systems for grant accounting and initiates updates.

  • Participate in the review of grant process workflows, system testing, and training. Provide feedback and recommendations for grant process system design improvements.

  • Employ reporting tools to generate financial reports; generate various output reports for grant analysis; initiates sponsor billings and receivables.

  • Frequently communicate with assigned Principal Investigators (PIs) to ensure timely and accurate grant reports.

  • Work collaboratively with other University Departments and other external agencies in support of grant management.

  • Support and assist in quarterly training sessions in grant processes and procedures for Principal Investigators and Office of Sponsored Research Projects.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or Business-related field.

  • A minimum of four years of grant accounting experience or equivalent experience managing grants, including budget management, ensuring compliance with legal or contractual requirements, record-keeping and preparation of monthly, quarterly and/or annual reporting, preferably in a college or university environment.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

  • Knowledge with accounting general ledger review, reconciliation and reports

  • Knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Uniform Guidance guidelines.

  • Ability to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills as well as strong analytical acumen.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.

  • Public Accounting Experience.

  • Experience with Cayuse, Workday Financial “Grant Management”, Contracts, Billing and Project Costing.

  • Membership in professional associations such as the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) or the Society of Research Administrators International (SRA).

  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members in the use of the Financial Management System.

Salary Range

$95,000.00-$105,000.00 Annually
