Your opportunity  
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in Garpenberg, you will have a role in ensuring safe and efficient mining operations at the Garpenberg Mine. This position is based in Garpenberg mine. You will be part of the long-term technical services team which is working on the mid- to long-term planning and the expansion of Garpenberg operations regarding both spatial extension of mining footprint and ore tonnage production increase. This requires a seasoned senior geotechnical engineer to oversee, assess and recommend design inputs, mining methods and sequence, impact on infrastructure and ground support designs.  

Who you will work with 

You will be part of a dedicated engineering team within the Long-term planning section within the Garpenberg Mine organization. You will work together with our geotechnical team of 6 geotechnical engineers and technicians, collaborating closely short-term mine planning, geology departments, production technology specialists and other technical service departments at the Garpenberg mine.

Your work will also involve interaction with consultants and other technical experts across Boliden’s operations. The Geotechnical network in the Boliden Mines is geographically distributed, but you will have regular opportunities for knowledge sharing and joint problem-solving in cross-functional projects. The geotechnical department at the Boliden Mines Staff is composed of numerous geotechnical engineers, seniors and specialists from various nationalities which instills a unique, welcoming culture that caters for a thriving environment. 

What you will do 

  • Work with our Mine planning engineers within Long-term planning and provide geotechnical input into LOMP designs and sequences as well as to our mid-range planning horizon 

  • Conduct geotechnical risk assessment of LOMP and Budget plans including stope dimensions, mining sequence, infrastructure placements and ground support designs 

  • Taking lead on updating, calibrating and validating numerical models at depth in Garpenberg in close collaboration with the local geotechnical team 

  • Revise and update the Seismic Risk Management Plan and Ground Control Management Plan, specifically at depth 

  • Work closely together with exploration and mine geology to develop a geotechnical block model and routines to maintain it 

  • Collaborate closely with mine planning, production teams, and external consultants 

  • Participate in R&D projects and contribute to improving rock mechanics processes within the department and at site 

  • Provide technical advice and facilitate cross-functional cooperation within the organization 

What you bring

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s or MSc in Mining Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Civil Engineering with Specialism in Mining, or Geotechnical Engineering 

Experience:  

  • 10+ years in hard rock underground mining, preferably base metals.  

  • Operational experience in deep mining preferred.  

  • Proven track record of strategy and long-term and/or budget involvement for mine planning and geotechnical engineering 

  • Solid knowledge of rock mechanics, structural geology, seismicity, hydrogeology and backfill. 

Skills:  

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to explain complex concepts clearly and proficiency in relevant software.  

  • Comfortable working individually and in teams closely with others, discussing technical topics with both engineers and non-engineers, and contributing to joint decisions in a team environment. 

  • Advanced numerical modelling experience using the ITASCA suite. 

  • Experience with seismic monitoring using the IMS suite and mXrap. 

  • Experience with deep, seismically active underground sublevel stoping mines. 

  • Strong computer skills, including experience with CAD software, preferably Deswik and other technical applications. 

  • Ability to write technical reports and communicate results to stakeholders. 

Languages:  

  • Proficiency in English and Swedish, or willingness and ability to learn Swedish quickly 

Driver’s License:  

  • Valid B-class license  

It’s an advantage if you have experience in project work, facilitating collaboration, and working in dynamic environments with changing priorities.
