Job Summary


The Senior Generation Engineering Specialist applies advanced expertise in control systems to support the design, operation, and optimization of energy infrastructure. This role involves developing and maintaining automated control strategies for generation equipment, ensuring reliable and efficient performance through platforms such as SCADA, PLCs, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Responsibilities include overseeing system integration, troubleshooting complex control-related issues, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The specialist also mentors junior staff and plays a key role in aligning SCADA/PLC/DCS architectures, logic, and workflows with operational objectives across generation, transmission, and distribution environments.

What you will do

  • Assists with the identification and development of innovative methods for improving project management processes and techniques and promotes continuous improvement in all processes.

  • Identifies new ways of utilizing existing resources and techniques to solve moderately complex problems.

  • Interfaces with GENCO engineering groups and plant management to ensure that recurring project and maintenance activities align with GENCO/plant/unit financial and operating goals.

  • Works on problems of diverse scope which require in-depth analysis to determine appropriate solution.

  • Leads or participates on project teams to deliver engineering services satisfactorily on time and on budget.

  • Monitors performance and conformance to all contractual or specification requirements.

  • Assists with the development of strategies and plans for implementing large recurring engineering and maintenance projects in support of reliable and efficient plant operation.

  • Works with plant staff to develop maintenance practices.

  • Provides root cause failure analysis as needed.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of vendor alliances and other contractors and may be responsible for specific vendor relationships.

  • Provides maintenance and engineering support to assigned generating equipment and has detailed knowledge of several areas within the function or group.

  • Assists with the establishment and application of corporate values in compliance with all environmental, safety and other laws and regulations.

  • Assists in budgeting process and analyzes facility level projects and activities.

  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.


Required Experience

  • 10 years of experience directly related to Steam Turbine, Combustion Turbine, and Boiler, Heat Recovery Steam Generator or Generator maintenance.

  • Proven experience working with vendors and contractors to deliver goods and services in a timely and professional manner.


Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the theory and application of business planning processes, including identifying industry trends and directions, developing and implementing engineering programs and strategies to satisfy customer’s present and future needs.

  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering and operations related financial and business skills including budgeting, accounting, utility economics, NPV, EBIT.

  • Proven project management and scheduling skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric and steam generation industry, power plant operations, mechanical and electrical equipment, and maintenance methods.

  • Skilled in the use of IT tools, including spreadsheets, word processing, scheduling and planning software, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the theory and application of data-guided management practices including Statistical Process Control, Continuous Quality and Process Improvement, and data collection and analysis.

  • Proven ability to administer company and union work rules, contracts and procedures.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management) preferred

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Pay Range:

$104,000 - $146,000

This position is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
