With the combination of AI and enterprise content, the opportunity has never been greater to transform how the world works together and at Box you will be on the front lines of this massive shift.

WHY BOX NEEDS YO

Artificial Intelligence has been rapidly advancing, particularly in the realm of generative AI. Leveraging the latest large language models and massive datasets, AI systems can now generate and understand content at an unprecedented scale. Box AI is a cutting-edge product recently launched by Box to harness the power of these advanced AI models within the Box Content Cloud. Box AI enables organizations to uncover insights, extract metadata for automation, get timely answers to critical questions, and effortlessly create content—all within Box. Box AI is embedded into multiple products on the Box Platform, made possible by the robust Intelligence Platform that powers it.

As a Senior Engineering Manager on Intelligence Platform, you will lead multiple teams of infrastructure and ML engineers and help define the strategy for the core foundations of this platform. You’ll guide how we apply AI models to real enterprise use cases at scale, with a strong focus on reliability, security, and compliance. You’ll partner with leaders across Product and Engineering to shape the long-term roadmap for Box AI and the Intelligence Platform. If you are enthusiastic about innovative AI solutions and enjoy leading high-performing teams through complex, cross-functional work, we’d love to hear from you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Lead and grow multiple teams of infrastructure and ML engineers (including senior individual contributors and, potentially, other managers) responsible for the AI platform that powers Box AI.
  • Define and drive the technical strategy and multi-quarter roadmap for the Intelligence Platform in partnership with Product and other engineering leaders.
  • Own execution of complex, multi-team initiatives that ensure our AI solutions are secure, compliant, reliable, and cost-efficient at enterprise scale.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including Product, Design, Security, Legal, and other platform/product teams to create seamless AI powered experiences across Box.
  • Establish and evolve operational excellence for your domain (e.g., SLIs/SLOs, on-call practices, incident management, quality and reliability metrics).
  • Build and maintain a high-performance culture focused on innovation, technical excellence, and continuous learning, while reinforcing clear expectations and accountability.
  • Drive hiring, succession planning, and talent development, with a particular focus on attracting and developing senior engineering talent aligned to the long-term needs of the platform.
  • Manage and coordinate the team’s on-call rotation to ensure timely and effective incident response, actively participate in escalated on-call incidents to provide leadership and support, and drive improvements by addressing recurring issues to minimize disruptions.

WHO YOU ARE

We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.

  • You are energized by leading through others and scaling impact by empowering senior engineers and managers rather than solving every problem yourself.
  • You have experience setting direction for complex ML/infra platforms and aligning multiple teams and stakeholders to a clear strategy and roadmap.
  • You combine strong technical judgment with a pragmatic approach to delivery, balancing short-term business outcomes with long-term platform health and vision.
  • You excel at building and growing teams: setting clear goals, giving direct feedback, coaching high performers, and handling performance issues when needed.
  • You are an effective communicator at multiple levels from deep technical discussions to concise executive updates and you use that skill to drive alignment and decisions.
  • You are comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-changing environments, making informed tradeoffs with data, customer insight, and business context.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering and/or machine learning, with 5+ years in an engineering management role leading teams (ideally including multi-team or manager-of-managers scope).
  • Proven ability to lead large, cross-functional initiatives and ship platform capabilities used by multiple product teams or domains.
  • Demonstrated success building, scaling, and improving engineering teams, including setting goals, defining metrics, and driving process improvements.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of partnering effectively with Product, Design, Security, and other cross-functional leaders.
  • Strong background in AI/ML infrastructure, distributed systems, and cloud-based platforms.
  • Hands-on experience in modern programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java, or R) with a solid technical foundation.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of defining and executing a multi-year roadmap where short-term projects clearly ladder up to a long-term platform vision.
  • Past experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) in production.
  • Deep understanding of one or more of the following: information retrieval, natural language processing, query understanding, or query expansion.
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, NumPy, pandas).
  • Familiarity with cloud-based ML platforms such as Vertex AI, AWS Bedrock, AWS SageMaker, etc.
  • Experience operating Kubernetes-based systems and running large-scale services in production.
