The Position

Primary Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to lead the Translational Medicine (TM) and Development Sciences (DevSci) Teams in China for Roche. The TM China team works with our global partners to primarily  lead biomarker development efforts as well as support activities across Bioanalytical sciences, Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Assessment. This role directly oversees clinical development projects in China and the Asia Pacific region for programs in early and late stage clinical development spanning multiple therapeutic modalities and areas including Oncology, Hematology, Neuroscience,, Immunology,  Cardiovascular, Metabolism and Ophthalmology. 

The Senior Director role serves as the site head for Translational Medicine and Development Sciences China, leading a lab enabled team of 13+ talented researchers and scientists. In this role the Senior Director represents TM China on local development and study teams as well as global teams and will develop and execute the biomarker, CDx  and translational research strategies for the respective therapeutic modalities. This role plays an important part in communicating to and developing collaborative relationships with key investigators and thought leaders in China and APAC, which will be essential in driving our translational sciences forward. 

The Senior Director and Site Head for Translational Medicine and Development Sciences China will report to the Head of Translational Medicine Oncology with a dotted reporting line the the Head of Development Sciences within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) based in South San Francisco, USA  and is a member of the Roche Product Development China Leadership Team. This role requires an individual who possesses a cross-enterprise (borderless) mindset with outstanding communication and leadership skills that enable collaboration across the Roche organization and the ability to build and facilitate strong relationships internally and externally.


 

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate and collaborate globally with Translational Medicine (TM) and Development Sciences (Dev Sci) leadership across Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED). 

  • Provide exceptional scientific leadership to team and peers across the organization

  • Lead and drive China biomarker strategies and collaborations, data analysis and interpretation, and presentation to review forums and governance committees 

  • Participate and lead as a key member of Roche Leadership activities including the Product Development China Leadership team, Roche Human Genetics Resources Administration of China (HGRAC) monitoring committee, China PHC working group, and China Medical affairs 

  • Contribute to the biomarker regulatory strategy for China/APAC, participate in interactions with health authorities in China and contribute to preparation of relevant regulatory documents

  • Develop and lead biomarker strategy and plan for medical affairs sponsored activities in China collaboration with the International medical leaders for the respective programs and the country medical affairs organization

  • Develop and lead biomarker collaborations with key investigators and thought leaders

  • Strategic oversight of DevSci-wide goals and activities in China (BioAnalytical Sciences and Clinical Pharmacology), including oversight over local external bioanalytical service providers and local Health Authority engagements, strategic vision for making an impact across programs in China, and ways to increase PTS or accelerate programs

  • Lead educational activities to improve quality of Companion Diagnostic (CDx) assessments and to increase capabilities regarding translational research in China

  • Lead external engagement/collaborations in the translational medicine, companion diagnostics or biomarker areas.

  • Participate in selection and monitoring of external vendors as well as external institutional collaborators to ensure generation of high quality data

  • Drive plans for growth of the organization on a 2-5 year timeframe and presents those plans to global leadership teams

Requirements:

  • PhD, MD or PhD/MD degree in a relevant biological discipline 

  • At least 12 years of experience in the biotech/pharma industry, with experience in technologies, biomarkers, and team leadership. 

  • Proven leadership capabilities in building, developing, motivating and retaining effective teams that foster productive collaborations and deliver exceptional results

  • Experience in drug development required, including experience with vendors and CROs in China and good familiarity with regulatory and government policies in China as it relates to drug development

  • Significant experience and ability to drive to effective decisions and enable execution on programs

  • Experience in clinical drug development and biomarkers is beneficial, including basic or advanced understanding of critical development functions, e.g. Clinical Pharmacology, Regulatory, Safety, Operations, Biostatistics, etc.

  • Experience and understanding of diagnostic product development

  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills

  • Ability to lead, influence and motivate others

  • Able to distill complex issues and clearly articulate solutions

  • Ability and willingness to travel as part of the global role (no more than 10% of time)
