Job Summary 

The Senior Director, Technology & Product Engineering – ITS serves as the senior technology and engineering leader for the ITS business, responsible for defining and executing the long-term technology strategy that enables the company’s product portfolio and future growth. Reporting to the VP & GM of ITS, this role provides strategic leadership across hardware, software, and systems engineering disciplines and ensures that the organization’s technology platforms, architectures, and development practices position the business for sustained innovation and competitive advantage. 
 
In close partnership with Product Management, which defines the product roadmap and market requirements, the Senior Director owns the technology roadmap and engineering strategy required to deliver those products effectively and sustainably. This includes responsibility for product architecture, technology platform evolution, engineering governance, and the execution of new product development and sustaining engineering programs across the ITS portfolio. 

Strategic Technology Leadership 

As the senior technology authority for the ITS business, the Senior Director provides strategic leadership for the long-term evolution of the organization’s technology platforms and engineering capabilities. The role establishes the technical vision that underpins the ITS product portfolio, ensuring that the company’s hardware, software, and system architectures remain scalable, secure, and competitive in rapidly evolving transportation infrastructure markets. 
 
The Senior Director serves as the primary advisor to the VP & GM on technology direction, engineering investment priorities, and technical risk management, ensuring that the ITS business maintains strong technical leadership and sustainable product platforms. 

Technology Strategy & Platform Roadmap 

  • Define and maintain the long-term technology strategy for the ITS business aligned with company objectives and market evolution. 
  • Develop and manage the multi-year technology roadmap supporting current and future ITS products, including hardware platforms, embedded systems, and software architecture. 
  • Partner closely with Product Management to translate product requirements into scalable technology platforms and engineering execution plans. 
  • Identify strategic technology investments required to enable next-generation product capabilities. 
  • Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and engineering tools to strengthen product performance and development efficiency. 

Engineering Execution & Product Development 

  • Lead all engineering development activities across hardware, software, systems, and product integration disciplines. 
  • Oversee execution of new product development programs from concept through design, verification, and release. 
  • Ensure disciplined engineering practices including requirements management, architecture design, system validation, and lifecycle management. 
  • Manage engineering execution through internal teams and external development partners to optimize development capacity and expertise. 
  • Ensure engineering delivery meets product performance, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives. 

Architecture Leadership & Technical Governance 

  • Provide architectural leadership across ITS products and technology platforms. 
  • Define and enforce engineering standards, design principles, and governance processes including architecture and design reviews. 
  • Ensure product architectures support scalability, interoperability, cybersecurity, and long-term lifecycle sustainability. 
  • Identify technical risks early and implement mitigation strategies to protect product performance and delivery timelines. 

Technology Innovation & Capability Development 

  • Lead the identification and adoption of emerging technologies relevant to intelligent transportation systems. 
  • Build relationships with technology partners, suppliers, and research organizations to accelerate innovation. 
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering tools, development methodologies, and system architectures. 

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Four-year college degree in Engineering or a related field; MBA preferred, 15 years of experience in product development and engineering leadership, including responsibility for major product, platform, or program initiatives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in architecture and product design principles, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Proven ability to translate business strategy into executable product and technology direction.
  • Experience operating in a solutions and program-oriented business, ideally within ITS or a closely related domain.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and talent development capabilities with a focus on collaboration and empowerment.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across functions and levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of relevant global industry and compliance standards.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and effective working in a dynamic, matrixed environment.

Work Environment / Travel

  • Domestic and international travel required.
  • Operates with limited supervision and exercises substantial discretionary decision-making authority within role scope.

*Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from our lowest geographic market up to our highest geographic market.
