Job Summary:

Vanderbilt Health – Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for a Senior Director of Advanced Practice, Adult Ambulatory Division, reporting to the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer, Ambulatory Division Nursing.

The Senior Director of Advanced Practice develops and leads an advanced practice operational and strategic infrastructure in alignment within entity, VUMC enterprise, and system goals. Ensures the delivery of high-quality and cost-effective care, based upon competency and evidence-based clinical practice and research. Lead individuals/teams across disciplines and possesses an ability to work with all levels of staff within a multidisciplinary group and leads Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and Physician Assistants to contribute to institution-wide initiatives at the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and VUMC levels. Expertise in the dissemination of expert knowledge (i.e., published author, national expert, academic leader, etc.), substantial contribution to the field of advanced practice leadership and service in nursing as demonstrated through service, awards, honors and/or positions held in state, national and/or charitable nursing, hospital and/or multi-disciplinary organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical expertise: Demonstrate experience and mastery as a practicing clinician. Serves as an internal and external expert consultant in clinical practice. Serves on department and enterprise clinical practice, administrative, and improvement committees. Leads practice-based learning and improvement initiatives. Serves as clinical leader in external associations and organizations as demonstrated by speaking and publication expertise. Has substantial experience in research and education and leads research and educational endeavors to advance clinical practice.

  • Management experience: Demonstrates ability to lead individuals and/or teams across disciplines and care continuum. Has substantial experience as a unit and/or operational leader, demonstrating skill in the administrative and operational functions and structure within the organization and across the health system. Expertise in transformational leadership, developing advanced practice nurses and others into leadership roles. Encourages collaboration and team building. Effectively reaches organizational goals while maintaining team cohesiveness and satisfaction. Assists in developing capital and operational budgets. Develops and maintains policy and procedure. Maintains compliance with regulatory agency requirements.

  • Structural empowerment: Represents advanced practice at hospital committees and functions.  Works collaboratively with hospital departments and the enterprise Office of Advanced Practice to ensure efficient operational flow, documentation, and utilization of advanced practice clinician services.  Sets high standards of performance for self and others by imposing standards of excellence and development of inquiry skills that are innovative, optimistic, and supportive of professional growth.  Creates development paths and plans for staff to increase the expertise and caliber of performance.  Actively recruits new staff.  Facilitates excellent clinical experiences for advanced practice students to promote recruitment of the best and brightest candidates, to assure the longevity of excellent care delivery and to support the educational mission of VUMC.

  • Expert skill in facilitation, consensus-building and negotiation: Demonstrates ability to work with all levels of staff, including administrators, executive leaders, physicians and peers. Serves on departmental, institutional and system-wide committees, representing advanced practice. Demonstrates expert ability to lead meetings effectively, achieve consensus among interprofessional groups and navigate conflict.

  • Understanding of broader group goals: Expert comprehension of advanced practice contributions to institution-wide initiatives on both the medical group and health system level. Serves as a main point of contact for senior leaders across the patient care center, entity and enterprise. Supports and often leads in the development, pursuit, and achievement of strategic and organizational goals.

  • Expertise on practice and regulatory compliance: Expert knowledge and application of national, state, and institutional advanced practice regulations, education, clinical training, licensure, certification and scope of practice. Advocates for top-of-license practice. Leads initiatives to develop and/or modify policies and procedures. Serves as an external expert in understanding advanced practice educational curriculums, guidelines set forth by regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission, and state and national laws governing advanced practice. Serves as an internal consultant for institutional regulations such as nursing and medical staff bylaws, credentialing and privileging, VUMC policies and procedures.

  • Healthy workforce:  Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting positive communication.  Resolves and manages conflict effectively and in a timely manner.  Extends trust by acknowledging the contributions of others:  listens openly.  Cares for patients and self by guiding department work scheduling in collaborating with other leaders and team members that supports safety, appropriate worked hours, and a healthy lifestyle.  Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.  Coaches staff and addresses workplace violence and impairment.  Creates an environment which recognizes and values differences in staff, clinicians, patients, and communities.  Counsels and coaches staff to assist them to achieve their highest professional potential.  Refers staff to additional resources for support when indicated.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree and 10 years of relevant experience (MHA, MSN, etc) 
  • DNP or PHD or Doctoral prepared - preferred 
  • Licensed Advanced Practice Provider (PA, NP, CRNA, Midwife)
  • Nurse Executive Certification preferred (NE-BC/NEA-BC)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups at various levels and various disciplines.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience working in a highly complex, matrixed health system environment, with relevant leadership experience, at a minimum, in one or more areas of an Ambulatory setting.
