Job Description Summary:
The Senior Director II, Legal Counsel – Marketing & Digital (NAOU) is a senior legal and strategic business leader who enables NAOU’s marketing and digital agenda at scale. Sitting on the NAOU Legal team, this role serves as the primary legal partner to NAOU Marketing and Digital leadership while helping to drive forward the agenda of the Global Marketing Function, the NAOU Marketing and Digital Functions, and the IP, Marketing & Digital Legal functions, through a North America Operating Unit lens. This role is a key enabler of the Global Legal Marketing Network.
This role blends legal leadership with strong digital, data, and technology fluency, ensuring that NAOU can move faster, innovate responsibly, and scale consumer centric, technology enabled marketing models—while protecting the Company’s license to operate and brand trust.
Strategic Impact

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Business & Legal Partnership
- Act as a trusted advisor to NAOU Marketing, Digital, and Consumer Technology leaders on strategy, innovation, and execution.
- Provide commercially grounded legal counsel that enables speed, scale, and responsible risk taking.
- Participate in NAOU marketing and digital leadership forums as an embedded legal thought partner.
- Serve as a trusted member and thought partner of the Global Legal Marketing and Digital networks
Marketing, Digital & Consumer Technology Enablement
- Support end‑to‑end digital and omnichannel marketing initiatives, including:
- Digital platforms and ecosystems
- Consumer data and identity strategies
- Personalization, CRM, loyalty, and consumer engagement technologies
- AI enabled marketing and automation tools
- Ensure legal frameworks evolve alongside new marketing technologies, platforms, and operating models.
Global to NAOU Translation of Marketing Technology Strategy
- Partner closely with Global Marketing and Digital leadership to advance global priorities within NAOU and adapt global tools, platforms, and policies for NAOU regulatory, operational, and commercial realities
Serve as NAOU’s legal voice into global discussions on digital marketing capabilities, governance, and risk.
Data, Privacy, AI & Technology Governance (in the Marketing context)
- Provide legal leadership on:
- Consumer data usage, consent, and governance in marketing and digital experiences
- AI and advanced analytics used in marketing, media, and consumer engagement
- Adtech, martech, and platform partnerships
- Partner with Privacy, Data, Cyber, IP, and Technology Legal teams to ensure integrated, consistent guidance.
Brand, Content & Consumer Trust
- Enable world class brand activation, innovation, and storytelling across digital first and experiential platforms.
- Provide guidance on advertising, claims, influencers, social, content creation, and emerging media.
- Balance creativity and speed with brand integrity, regulatory compliance, and reputational risk management.
- Review digital campaign mechanics including promotions, gamification, UGC programs, influencer activations, sweepstakes, and one-click commerce integrations.
- Advise on digital platform integrations, data capture mechanisms, consumer consent flows, and personalization strategies in collaboration with Privacy and Data teams.
- Work with the Global Marketing legal team to support activation of global partnerships across sports, music, culture, gaming and creator ecosystems within digital environments.
Regulatory Monitoring & Risk Foresight
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of evolving advertising, digital marketing, AI, influencer, e-commerce, advertising and consumer protection regulations in North America.
- Translate regulatory developments into practical guidance for global marketing teams.
- Identify emerging risks in digital activations and propose forward-looking mitigation strategies.
Operating Model & Capability Building
- Help shape and NAOU’s marketing and digital legal operating model to support: agile ways of working, scaled review and enablement, repeatable playbooks and guardrails
Leadership & Influence
- Serve as a leader within NAOU Legal, modeling enterprise mindset and modern legal leadership.
- Mentor and develop legal talent supporting marketing and digital initiatives.
- Contribute to broader Legal Function transformation around digital fluency and business partnership.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 10+ years of legal experience
- Senior level legal experience supporting marketing, digital, consumer technology, or data driven business models
- Strong understanding of:
- Digital marketing ecosystems and platforms
- Consumer data, privacy, and technology enabled engagement
- Emerging technologies (AI, automation, advanced analytics) in a marketing context
- Demonstrated ability to operate at the intersection of law, technology, and commercial strategy
- Proven success partnering with senior business leaders in complex, fast‑moving environments
- Global mindset with the ability to apply enterprise strategies locally

Pay Range:
$236,000 - $271,000
Base pay offered may vary depending on geography, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position, is offered.
