Senior Director, Field Medical Excellence (office based)

The Senior Director, Field Medical Excellence plays a crucial role in optimizing the performance and effectiveness of our field medical teams across Europe. This hands-on leadership role serves and supports the countries by providing guidance, training programs, engagement strategies, and in the field coaching. Further, the role measures and monitors the impact of the field team through metrics, and ensures systematic and diligent capture of insights that, together with the metrics, feed into the organization to enable insight-driven strategic business decisions. The role is not responsible for scientific content, which remains under the remit of Regional Medical Leads.

Essential Functions of the job:

Setting Strategic Direction for Field Medical Engagement

  • Accountable for setting clear strategic direction and focus for Healthcare Professional (HCP) and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) engagement and insight gathering. The incumbent will collaborate closely with the Regional Medical Leads, who are the subject matter experts providing content, the Country Field Medical Leads, who lead the field teams day to day, and in alignment with Clinical Operations, to ensure a coordinated approach to engagement of clinical trial sites and trial investigators.

  • Develops and maintains a strategic roadmap for enhancing and optimizing the impact of the field medical team, and ensures the execution of this plan at the field level.

Developing Training Programs for Field Medical Advisors and Leads

  • Accountable for developing and implementing soft skill training programs to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Field Medical Advisors and Leads. This work takes place in close collaboration with the Field Medical Leads in the region. Execution includes leveraging internal platforms for training such as BeOne University.

  • Accountable for defining, implementing, and maintaining a Field Medical Competency Framework, including role expectations, skills assessment, certification, and continuous capability development.

  • Collaborates with Field Medical Excellence leads in other regions and in the global team to identify opportunities for synergies, streamlining and alignment.

Engagement Best Practices

  • Accountable for defining and driving the implementation of best practices for mapping, segmenting, targeting and engaging HCPs.

  • Oversees and supports the development of local and regional engagement plans that align with regulations, guidelines, cultural norms, and the changing needs of HCPs.

  • Regularly engages with the field teams in-country to coach, support and resolve operational challenges.

CRM Oversight and Leadership

  • Accountable for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and utilization of the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database. This work takes place in close collaboration with the Digital Strategic Enablement (DSE) representative and the Country Field Medical Leads. Regional Program Management and DSE provide additional expertise and support execution.

  • Accountable for defining and driving the implementation of guidance on optimal data entry practices into the CRM system, ensuring data quality, integrity, and compliance with regional regulations.

Leadership in Performance Metrics

  • Accountable for defining performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) and setting appropriate targets for the Field Medical Advisors across the region, focusing on HCP engagement quality, insight quality, and contribution to evidence generation and strategy

  • Accountable for monitoring overall performance in the region and analyzing metrics to refine engagement strategies and optimize engagement efforts.

  • Accountable for developing and implementing training and guidance for Field Medical Leads on how to leverage metrics for coaching and improving the impact of Field Medical Advisors.

Insights Gathering, Analysis and Reporting

  • Accountable for driving end-to-end insights gathering processes. This includes ensuring insights are appropriately captured, analyzed, and that actionable recommendations are provided to relevant stakeholders, so that we enhance organizational effectiveness and support strategic fact-based decision making.

Innovation and Organizational Evolution

  • Accountable for exploring and assessing the potential benefits of adopting innovative approaches, technologies, platforms, and solutions, in order to optimize field medical effectiveness, and reporting to medical leadership.

  • Maintains oversight over and fosters connectivity between the field medical teams in the affiliates, supports strategic decisions and sharing best practices, including providing recommendations for improvements in structure and ways of working.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Indirect leadership of the field medical team in the region.

  • Managing vendors that provide tools and training for the field medical team.

Qualifications Required:

  • 12+ years of experience within the pharmaceutical, biotech or life sciences industry with a Bachelor’s degree, or 8+ years of experience with a Master’s degree, or 6+ years of experience with an advanced degree in life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or related field,.

  • Proven track record leading large field teams in medical affairs.

  • Prior field experience is a must.

  • Capable of leading without formal authority in a matrix organization.

  • Enterprise mindset and business acumen.

  • Learning agility and conscientiousness.

  • Strong understanding of European healthcare compliance and regulations.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and cultures.

  • Fluency in English. Proficiency in German, Spanish, Italian and French is advantageous.

  • Proficiency in Office 365, CRM systems, and data management practices.

  • Strong understanding of performance and impact metrics, statistics, and KPIs.

  • Early adopter of new technology such as generative Artificial Intelligence and proficiency in prompting Large Language Models.

Travel: Significant travel (up to 50%) is required in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the role including attendance at local, regional and global congresses, as well as co-traveling with medical advisors throughout the region.
