Job Description
What is the opportunity?
Royal Bank of Canada is transforming how organizations adopt and optimize hybrid cloud infrastructure at enterprise scale. As Senior Director, Customer Engineering, you'll lead a function that bridges our engineering teams and customers, driving successful cloud migrations, modernizations, and integrations while supporting M&A onboarding. You'll combine deep technical expertise with customer empathy, leading complex implementations and mentoring specialized teams. This is an opportunity to shape how thousands of engineers across the enterprise adopt cloud infrastructure, accelerate customer business outcomes, and drive measurable value through strategic advisory partnerships in a professional services model.
What will you do?
Drive customer success through strategic solution design, technical advisory, and implementation leadership; establish trusted relationships with key engineering stakeholders and business sponsors to understand constraints and deliver tailored solutions that optimize cost, compliance, and business outcomes.
Lead complex customer implementation roadmaps, evaluating migration versus modernization strategies; oversee engineering and contractor teams to ensure quality delivery, adherence to enterprise standards, and achievement of customer-funded objectives.
Support the customer onboarding pipeline by assessing fit-to-platform, providing technical enablement, and mentoring internal teams on deployment patterns and best practices to accelerate time-to-value and scale organizational capability.
Synthesize customer requirements and pain points across active implementations; partner with product and engineering leadership to inform platform roadmap prioritization, advocate for customer needs, and communicate decisions clearly to manage expectations.
Lead technical discovery and assessment of newly acquired entities' infrastructure and compliance posture; develop comprehensive onboarding and integration plans aligned to enterprise standards and regulatory requirements.
Manage customer implementation budgets and contractor spend; build forecast models, track utilization and outcomes, and drive measurable value delivery including cost optimization, cost avoidance, and realized business value from successful migrations.
Lead 7 direct reports and ~20 indirect reports; foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning through coaching, career development, and mentoring of specialized cloud infrastructure engineers.
Partner cross-functionally with security, compliance, finance, and procurement teams on regulatory adherence, control assessments, contractor management, and cost allocation to ensure transparent cost recovery and sustainability.
What do you need to succeed?
Must have:
10-12+ years leading technical teams or solution engineering functions in regulated enterprise environments; 5+ years in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or professional services delivery.
Proven success leading complex cloud infrastructure migration and modernization programs at scale; demonstrated ability to develop phased roadmaps, manage multi-year implementations, and deliver measurable customer business outcomes.
Deep technical expertise in cloud infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code practices, and cloud security/compliance; ability to translate technical concepts into customer-friendly guidance and mentor engineers at varying skill levels.
Strong vendor and partner management experience; demonstrated ability to manage contractor teams, statement of works, budgets, negotiate terms, and ensure quality delivery.
Exceptional customer empathy and communication skills; ability to build trust, navigate competing priorities, manage expectations, and influence across organizational boundaries and business units.
Financial acumen with experience managing project budgets, contractor spend, cost modeling, and providing financial analysis to support infrastructure investment decisions.
Nice to have:
M&A integration or infrastructure consolidation experience; demonstrated ability to rapidly assess disparate technology environments, identify integration risks, and execute integration plans with minimal disruption.
Experience in regulated financial services environments; familiarity with compliance and governance frameworks in highly regulated industries.
Ability to synthesize complex technical information into strategic business insights that inform executive decision-making and roadmap prioritization.
Track record of building and scaling high-performing teams; demonstrated success in talent development, succession planning, and organizational scaling.
