Job summary

As the Senior Crate Maker, you will be the technical authority and day-to-day lead within the Crate Making Workshop. Your primary responsibility is the expert design and construction of custom crates for valuable and diverse artworks. You will also take on supervisory duties, managing the daily workflow, mentoring junior team members, and ensuring all production meets Crozier's exacting quality and safety standards. You will ensure the workshop runs efficiently in support of the wider logistics operation.

Your role in our mission:

  • Design, construct, and finish bespoke, museum-quality crates and packaging for diverse artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and complex installations, ensuring maximum protection during transport.
  • Act as the operational lead, supervising the daily activities and workflow of the Crate Making team to ensure production targets and deadlines are met efficiently.
  • Serve as the workshop's technical expert, providing guidance, troubleshooting complex crating challenges, and mentoring junior Crate Makers on advanced techniques and best practices.
  • Conduct final checks on all completed crating projects, ensuring compliance with design specifications, international shipping standards, and internal quality protocols.
  • Monitor material stock levels (timber, foam, hardware, etc.), working closely with the Operations Manager to communicate needs and ensure materials are ordered and prepared for scheduled projects.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all workshop health and safety protocols and maintain the correct usage and general upkeep of all machinery, tools, and equipment.

Valued Skills and Experience

  • Extensive, proven experience as a Crate Maker, Joiner, Carpenter, or in a similar skilled fabrication role, preferably within the fine art logistics or high-value manufacturing sector.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory, team lead, or mentoring role, with the ability to manage workflow and motivate a technical team.
  • Expert proficiency in the design, construction, and finishing of bespoke wooden crates and packaging solutions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and quality.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for effective team direction, inter-departmental collaboration, and clear reporting to the Operations Manager.
  • Physical fitness and the capability to handle heavy materials and operate woodworking machinery safely and effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of workshop safety procedures and the proper operation and maintenance of carpentry equipment.
