The Senior Controls Systems Engineer plays a critical role in the successful construction and commissioning of Aggreko's complex Hybrid Power Projects. This position involves leading the design, implementation, testing, and optimization of integrated control systems (including PLC, SCADA, HMI, and Energy Management Systems) that manage the seamless operation of diverse power generation technologies such as Thermal, Solar, Wind and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The role demands advanced technical expertise, strong problem-solving abilities, and leadership in ensuring robust, safe, and efficient control solutions throughout the construction and handover phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the review and approval of control system designs, specifications, and architecture for hybrid power projects, ensuring alignment with project requirements, industry standards, and Aggreko's technical guidelines.
  • Design and implement complex control logic (SCADA/PLC/DCS programming) for power generation assets (Thermal, Solar, Wind and BESS) and their interaction within a unified hybrid plant.
  • Develop and refine SCADA/HMI systems for centralized monitoring, control, and data acquisition, ensuring intuitive operator interfaces and comprehensive data capture.
  • Define network architectures and communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, IEC 61850, OPC UA) for robust and secure data exchange between control components.
  • Provide expert technical leadership and on-site support during the installation, wiring, testing, and commissioning phases of control systems for hybrid power projects.
  • Oversee Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for control hardware and software
  • Lead the troubleshooting and resolution of complex control system issues and integration challenges encountered during construction and initial operation, minimizing project delays.
  • Collaborate closely with contractors, electrical engineers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure proper integration of all control elements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in controls systems for hybrid power applications, providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and project teams.
  • Ensure all control system implementations comply with relevant international standards (e.g., IEEE, IEC), local grid codes, environmental regulations, and Aggreko's safety policies for power facilities.

To thrive in this role you will possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics or Automation Engineering, or a related field, with post grad highly regarded
  • Ideally have a minimum of 8+ years of experience in industrial automation and control systems
  • A minimum of at least 3-5 years focused on power generation, renewable energy, or hybrid power projects
  • Demonstrated experience in the full project lifecycle, particularly the construction, commissioning, and startup phases of complex control systems.
  • Proven track record of working with Hybrid Power Plant architectures involving Thermal, Solar, Wind and BESS components.
  • Experience with off grid integration and energy management strategies for power plants.
  • Expert-level proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider Electric) and SCADA/HMI development (e.g., Ignition, Wonderware, WinCC).
  • Strong understanding of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) controls, power conversion systems (PCS), and inverter technology for solar PV.
  • In-depth knowledge of control theory, industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus/Profinet), and communication protocols relevant to power systems.
  • Familiarity with Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Plant Control Systems (PCS) specific to hybrid power plants.
  • Experience with relevant software tools for simulation, configuration, and diagnostics.
