Job Description:
What’s the role
Shipping & Maritime is Shell’s center of expertise for all maritime matters, supporting customer-facing businesses through HSSE, operational excellence, commercial delivery, ship management, risk management, emergency response, local maritime knowledge, and technology innovation.
In a tightening emissions regulatory environment, the Senior Commercial Analyst plays a key role in maximizing value for Trading & Supply’s vessel fleet. This permanent role bridges Shipping & Maritime technical expertise and Trading & Supply, analyzing data from time-chartered ships to drive operational and technical improvements, monitor KPIs, foster energy efficiency, and assess the commercial impact of emissions costs. Strong digital skills are essential for handling large, complex datasets.
The position is based in London, with potential international travel, and reports to the Commercial & New Business Development Manager for Trading & Supply.
What you’ll be doing
This role supports short- and long-term Freight Trading and global Operations in optimizing value across the supply chain, with a focus on shipping. It drives the shift from point solutions to integrated, digital optimization and challenges the status quo where possible.
- Provide first-line support to Freight Operations, Trading, and Optimization teams on vessel fuel, heel, and cargo management; implement performance strategies for cost and environmental savings.
- Deliver best-practice efficiency advice and training to internal stakeholders and ship owners.
- Support strategies to improve operational and technical efficiency across T&S fleet and replicate best practices.
- Automate and process shipping data to identify value opportunities.
- Provide analytical support from fleet-wide performance trends to voyage-specific equipment analysis.
- Drive continuous improvement in commercial operations for voyages and ports.
- Prepare operational efficiency reports and assist in benchmarking owned, managed, and chartered vessels.
- Contribute to Shell’s data analytics strategy and tools development.
- Assess GHG regulatory impacts and support emissions monitoring/reporting projects.
- Provide maritime expertise for Business Performance Reviews, including benchmarking and OPEX analysis.
- Support Shipping & Maritime’s Ultimate Potential Value program.
What you bring
A strong maritime background is a significant differentiator for this role. Understanding the LNG supply chain and its complex interdependencies is critical, as these create opportunities for optimization and cost savings. Candidates who combine this knowledge with advanced analytical and digital skills will stand out in the selection process.
- LNG Supply Chain Knowledge: Familiarity with LNG trading, shipping operations, and how scheduling, cargo management, and vessel performance impact commercial outcomes.
- Operational Experience: Sailing experience on LNG carriers—particularly in roles with direct responsibility for cargo management and operations—will be a major advantage. This hands-on expertise enables practical insights into vessel performance, fuel efficiency, and compliance challenges.
- Optimization Mindset: Ability to translate operational realities into data-driven strategies for improving efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing commercial value.
We’d also like to see the following:
- Digital & Analytical Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Alteryx, Python, Power BI, and Spotfire; SQL and API experience desirable. Excel alone is insufficient due to the scale and complexity of data.
- Stakeholder Influence: Ability to build trust and credibility with internal teams and external partners, including ship owners and vessel crews.
- Soft Skills: High cross-cultural awareness, tact, diplomacy, and strong communication skills.
- Mindset: Passion for operational efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement; adaptability to evolving digital tools and collaboration with IT teams.
- Personal Attributes: Professionalism, teamwork, independence, curiosity, and resilience in a fast-paced trading environment.
- Other: Strong organizational and time-management skills; ability to deliver analysis under tight deadlines and anticipate data-driven opportunities.
We support flexible working and encourage co-creation and active interaction among colleagues.
After you submit your application, you will receive an email from Shell providing a link to an online assessment (HireVue) that is a mandatory part of the process and has a validity period – please check your spam/junk mailbox if you do not see the email.
