Essential Responsibilities for Senior Network Engineer

Deliver on Business Priorities & Strengthen the Technology Foundation

  • Design, implement, and support enterprise network solutions across data centers, cloud platforms, and retail locations to enable CarMax Infrastructure & Operations modernization, cybersecurity, and vulnerability‑management initiatives.
  • Collaborate with peers in product management, systems architecture, cloud, and security to develop and deliver scalable, resilient network architectures with measurable business impact.
  • Serve as a technical contributor on high‑visibility, cross‑functional projects, ensuring on‑time delivery, quality execution, and alignment to architectural standards.

Improve Execution Through Automation & Standardization

  • Build and evolve self‑service capabilities, automation, and repeatable patterns for network device configuration, deployment, patching, and lifecycle management.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and ongoing use of a network lab environment to test, validate, and continuously improve network solutions before production deployment.
  • Actively eliminate repetitive manual work through network automation and scripting (e.g., Python, Ansible).

Elevate Monitoring, Reliability, and Operational Excellence

  • Implement, enhance, and maintain network monitoring and visibility solutions to close capability gaps and provide actionable insights across all I&O systems.
  • Improve remote management capabilities for field and retail locations.
  • Participate in operational support, troubleshooting complex network issues, incident resolution, and continuous reliability improvements.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation with the rest of the network team.

Operate Securely with Predictability and Cost Discipline

  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to harden the network environment, reduce incidents, accelerate recovery, and eliminate unplanned downtime.
  • Support CarMax I & O’s patching strategy, including evaluation, automation, scheduled deployments, and playbooks for out‑of‑band or day‑zero patches.
  • Manage and coordinate with external vendors to ensure service quality, cost effectiveness, and alignment with CarMax standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technology field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience designing, deploying, and supporting enterprise networks

Required Technical Experience

  • Fortinet / Cisco / Palo Alto firewall experience
  • Aruba / Cisco switching experience
  • Heavy project delivery experience in complex environments
  • Advanced network troubleshooting and operational support
  • Network monitoring and visibility tools (e.g., SolarWinds, LogicMonitor, WhatsUp Gold)
  • Routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP

Preferred Experience

  • Cisco ISE or HPE ClearPass and Identity-Based Network Access Control
  • Enterprise Wi‑Fi solutions
  • External vendor management
  • Network automation (Python, Ansible, or similar)

Cloud‑Specific Qualifications and Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience with Azure services, including:
    • Virtual networking, Virtual Machines, Azure AD, Key Vaults, Web Apps, Access Management, and automated deployments
  • 2+ years scripting or coding experience
  • Hands‑on experience with:
    • Private and public cloud networking and connectivity
    • Virtual networking, firewalls, access control, storage, and virtualization
  • Experience with one or more programming/scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or C#
  • Experience building and managing CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, TeamCity)
  • Strong diagnostic, problem‑investigation, and attention‑to‑detail skills
  • Passion for automation, reliability, and continuous improvement

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond Corp Office or Plano Tech hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement. 

  • Associates based in Richmond work on-site 4 days per week.
  • Associates based in Plano work onsite 2 days per week.
