About the Role:

Reporting to the Head of Infrastructure, Cloud and Mobile Core, this role will focus primarily on cloud technologies, with a strong emphasis on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for enterprise-scale infrastructure and services. The successful candidate will architect, build, maintain, and support cloud-based solutions, ensuring high availability, scalability, and security for Virgin Media Ireland’s critical business platforms. Experience with AI/ML solutions on cloud is a distinct advantage.

Specific Duties & Tasks:

  • Manage and maintain Virgin Media’s cloud infrastructure, with a primary focus on GCP. You will be working alongside a small Cloud Platform Team (Tier 2/3)

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert on two or more of the following: GCP networking, cloud security, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, serverless computing, or cloud-based AI/ML services.

  • Act as design authority for cloud-native and hybrid architectures, ensuring alignment with business and technical requirements with our Infrastructure Architect.

  • Stay current with the latest cloud and AI trends, evaluating and planning the adoption of new technologies on the GCP platform.

  • Represent the Cloud Engineering team in meetings with stakeholders, translating business needs into scalable cloud solutions.

  • Lead the build, configuration, and integration of cloud services, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as required.

  • Ensure service deliveries are completed according to project milestones and within budget.

  • Perform cloud infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and optimizations, adhering to Change Management procedures.

  • Act as Tier 4 escalation point for complex cloud incidents, applying expert technical knowledge to resolve issues within SLA.

  • Configure and support core cloud network elements (VPCs, subnets, firewalls, load balancers, VPNs, interconnects).

  • Demonstrate hands-on experience with GCP services such as Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, (and AI Platform as an advantage).

  • Experience with multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure) is an advantage.

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using tools like Terraform or Deployment Manager.

  • Identify and remediate legacy or non-compliant cloud resources to ensure platform stability and security.

  • Raise complex issues with cloud vendors and assist support teams with resolution, including incident replication and troubleshooting.

  • Manage IP address requirements and DNS configurations for cloud resources.

  • Leverage scripting (Python, Bash, or similar) for automation and operational efficiency.

Skills & Expertise:

  • Relevant third-level qualification, ideally in computer science, engineering, or a related field – essential

  • 5+ years’ experience in cloud engineering or cloud architecture roles, preferably within a large-scale enterprise or telecom environment – essential

  • Professional-level GCP certification (e.g., Professional Cloud Architect, Professional Cloud Network Engineer) – essential

  • Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and managing solutions on Google Cloud Platform – essential

  • Strong expertise in cloud networking, security, and automation (Terraform, Deployment Manager, or similar) – essential

  • Experience with Kubernetes, serverless computing, and CI/CD pipelines in cloud environments – essential

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and support multi-cloud solutions (AWS, Azure) – desired

  • Experience with cloud-based AI/ML services and platforms (e.g., GCP AI Platform, Vertex AI) – desired

  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or Bash for automation and operational efficiency – desired

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills – essential

  • Experience with cloud migration, optimization, and troubleshooting in a production environment – essential

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and participate in an on-call rota as required

  • High attention to detail, quality-focused, and a methodical approach to both daily tasks and project work

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to lead by example and inspire others
