Job Summary

The Senior Certification Specialist will join a customer-facing team delivering safety-critical Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems for international customers. The successful applicant will lead certification, verification and validation activities against European ATM regulatory frameworks and operational requirements, interface with the customer on technical matters, and ensure engineering deliverables meet safety and quality criteria.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead planning, design and execution of certification and verification activities for safety-critical ATM systems aligned to European standards and customer requirements.

  • Translate customer and regulatory requirements into verifiable acceptance criteria, test plans, and traceability matrices.

  • Validate system capability to meet functional and performance requirements for air traffic operations.

  • Coordinate and oversee testing and certification of distributed systems, including on-site and remote testing with customer teams.

  • Develop, review and approve testing methodologies; assist with failure-mode assessments and identification of safety-critical risks and deficiencies.

  • Produce audit-ready documentation: test plans and reports, compliance matrices, etc.

  • Act as principal customer-facing certification contact: present results, negotiate acceptance criteria, assist with managing customer expectations and resolve certification issues.

  • Advise senior management and project stakeholders on certification status, risks, compliance gaps and recommended remediation paths.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, systems, electrical, avionics, computer engineering or computer science from a recognized university or an acceptable combination of education, experience and training.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software and hardware test engineering, large-scale integration testing, certification, validation or safety assurance (preferably for ATM, CNS or aviation systems).

  • Demonstrated customer-facing experience delivering complex, multi-stakeholder certification projects and negotiating acceptance with operators or customers.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of European ATM regulatory frameworks, including relevant Eurocontrol/SESAR standards.

  • Understanding of ATM system architectures, CNS/ATM services, and certification of Air Traffic Control systems.

  • Thorough knowledge of software development lifecycles, verification & validation processes, and configuration management.

  • Practical knowledge of system safety engineering, and safety-case development.

  • Awareness of industry trends and technological advances, with the ability to assess the implications of technological advancements on NAV CANADA ATC systems’ needs and operations.

Abilities:

  • Ability to design and execute complex test plans and protocols; create traceability from requirements to evidence/results.

  • Ability to interpret European ATM regulations and customer requirements and convert them into measurable certification test cases.

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team, lead a test team, and interface with external customers.

  • Ability in written and oral communications to produce clear, concise, audit-ready certification documentation and executive summaries.

  • Ability to identify certification risks early and produce practical mitigation strategies.

  • Ability to effectively use test management, requirements-traceability and configuration-control tools.

Flexible work arrangements:

  • This is a hybrid position with a minimum 3 days per week on site required.
