Clutch is seeking a Senior Building Operator - Night Shift to join our Real Estate team! This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to one of Canada’s fastest-growing companies as we rapidly scale our physical footprint. You’ll play a critical role in supporting overnight facility operations by ensuring our buildings, equipment, and infrastructure remain safe, functional, and operational to support Clutch’s fast-paced business.

Role Overview

The Senior Building Operator - Night Shift is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant overnight operation of assigned facilities. This role is focused on hands-on building operations, equipment monitoring, first-line troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and emergency response. The Senior Building Operator - Night Shift supports operational continuity by identifying issues early, resolving routine building-related problems independently, and escalating higher-risk or specialized issues when required.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Operations & Maintenance

  • Oversee overnight building operations to ensure facilities are safe, secure, clean, and fully operational.
  • Perform routine inspections of building systems, equipment, and critical infrastructure to identify deficiencies, risks, and maintenance needs.
  • Complete preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance tasks assigned through the work order management system.
  • Carry out minor repairs and first-line troubleshooting for HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, lighting, doors, drains, and general building systems.
  • Monitor and respond to facility-related issues affecting daily operations, including after-hours and emergency situations.
  • Support the efficient operation of service bays, detailing areas, vehicle flow areas, and other high-use operational spaces.

Technical & Systems Management

  • Monitor building systems including HVAC, makeup air units, exhaust and ventilation systems, pumps, motors, plumbing systems, lighting, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Conduct first-response troubleshooting on mechanical and building-related issues and implement safe temporary or permanent repairs where appropriate.
  • Monitor oil-water separators, waste handling areas, and related infrastructure to ensure proper operation and identify issues requiring escalation.
  • Record inspections, maintenance activities, deficiencies, and repairs accurately in CMMS or facility logs.
  • Assist with equipment shutdowns, start-ups, resets, and operating adjustments in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Escalate specialized repairs to supervisors, vendors, or licensed trades when work falls outside scope or safety limits.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with all applicable building codes, health and safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and environmental standards.
  • Maintain a safe working environment during overnight operations by identifying hazards and taking corrective action where required.
  • Support site emergency response procedures, including incident containment, equipment isolation, and escalation to internal leaders or external vendors.
  • Report safety concerns, near misses, spills, deficiencies, and compliance risks in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through disciplined work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Vendor & Contractor Coordination

  • Coordinate and escort after-hours contractors or emergency vendors as required.
  • Support third-party service providers by providing site access, operational context, and follow-up documentation.
  • Verify that contractor work is completed safely and that affected equipment or areas are returned to service appropriately.
  • Communicate overnight issues, vendor visits, and outstanding deficiencies clearly to the daytime facilities team.

Documentation & Communication

  • Maintain accurate shift logs, inspection records, work order updates, and turnover notes.
  • Provide clear handoff communication to day shift teams regarding outstanding issues, completed work, risks, and recommended next steps.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of standard operating procedures for overnight facility operations.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend practical maintenance or reliability improvements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • College diploma, trade certification, or equivalent practical experience in Building Operations, Facilities Maintenance, Mechanical Systems, Electrical Systems, or a related field.
  • Typically, 3–5 years of experience in building operations, industrial maintenance, facilities maintenance, or a similar hands-on technical role.
  • Experience in commercial, industrial, automotive, logistics, or high-throughput operational environments is preferred.
  • Experience working independently on evenings, nights, or rotating shifts is preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on knowledge of HVAC, makeup air, ventilation, plumbing, pumps, motors, lighting, and general building systems.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and complete minor repairs safely and independently.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is an asset.
  • Basic understanding of oil-water separators, waste oil handling areas, and related environmental controls is an asset.
  • Extremely proficient in Google Office Suite.

Professional Skills

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities with a practical, hands-on approach.
  • High level of ownership, initiative, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong judgment and ability to remain calm under pressure during overnight incidents or equipment failures.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to document issues clearly and communicate effectively across shifts.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliable, responsive, and committed to maintaining a high standard of service.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Building Environmental Systems (BES) certification
  • Refrigeration Operator Class B or higher
  • Trade certification in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or millwright work
  • First Aid / CPR certification
  • WHMIS
  • Working at Heights
  • Forklift or aerial lift certification

Working Conditions

  • Primarily on-site at operating facilities during overnight shifts.
  • Regular exposure to industrial, fast-paced operational environments.
  • Frequent walking, climbing, lifting, and use of tools and maintenance equipment.
  • Occasional emergency response, after-hours vendor coordination, and urgent repair work may be required.
  • This is a full-time hourly position, with eligibility for overtime in accordance with applicable employment standards legislation. A night shift premium will also apply

  • Salary range: $40-$44 hourly
