What Is the Opportunity?

This role is responsible for supporting the management and oversight of delegated underwriting arrangements (coverholder and MGA relationships) on behalf of Travelers' Bond & Specialty Insurance (BSI) Europe division, operating within the Lloyd's market. The Sr Associate Underwriter will take ownership of a portfolio of delegated authorities across the BSI Europe Financial Lines suite — encompassing Management Liability, Professional Indemnity (PI), Cyber, and Transactional Liability — ensuring that business written under delegated authority is consistent with Travelers' underwriting strategies, appetite, and profitability objectives. Working with the Delegated Underwriting team, the Sr Associate will independently manage the day-to-day administration, monitoring, and performance management of the delegated portfolio, act as a primary referral point for coverholder partners, and contribute actively to business development and cross-sell activity.

What Will You Do?

  • Technical Underwriting & Referral Management
  • Underwrite and assess referrals submitted by coverholder and MGA partners across the BSI Europe Financial Lines portfolio, making sound over-authority decisions within own underwriting authority and providing considered recommendations to technical underwriting leadership on complex or high-value risks.
  • Act as the primary referral point for coverholder and MGA partners, managing a broader referral pipeline, including risks requiring multi-product or cross-class analysis with oversight as required.
  • Identify and capture new business opportunities and effectively cross sell Bond & Specialty and Business Insurance products.
  • Own and maintain underwriting guidelines applicable to delegated authority partners, driving their regular review, update, and communication in line with market developments and Travelers’ appetite.
  • Monitor and interpret market trends, emerging risks, and coverage developments across the Financial Lines product suite, translating insights into actionable guidance for coverholder partners and the wider delegated team.
  • Portfolio Management & Performance Analysis
  • Lead Collaborative Underwriting Reviews (CUREs) and Portfolio Reviews for the delegated Financial Lines book, independently driving performance analysis, identifying trends, and presenting findings and recommendations to senior management.
  • Review and analyse bordereaux data submitted by coverholders, proactively identifying and escalating trends, anomalies, or areas of concern, and coordinating follow-up actions with coverholder partners.
  • Track and report on key portfolio performance metrics — including premium volumes, loss ratios, retention, and new business — against plan, and recommend corrective action where required.
  • Collaborate with claims teams to understand and interpret claims trends and incorporate learnings into underwriting assessments, appetite guidance, and coverholder feedback.
  • Prepare and own regular performance reports and management information on delegated authority portfolio results, ensuring accuracy and delivery to agreed timelines.
  • Support the achievement of financial plan targets (premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, new business, and expense management) through superior service and responsiveness.
  • Partner Management & Development
  • Lead coverholder audits and performance reviews, taking ownership of preparation, execution, outcome documentation, and remediation follow-up under Lloyd’s and internal governance frameworks.
  • Build, maintain, and develop senior productive working relationships with coverholder and MGA partners, brokers, and internal colleagues across Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Compliance, and Distribution.
  • Support the assessment and onboarding of new coverholder relationships, including oversight of due diligence reviews, drafting and negotiation of delegated authority agreements, and sign-off of onboarding documentation.
  • Provide technical support, market feedback, and appetite guidance to delegated partners to enhance their underwriting capabilities and alignment with Travelers’ strategy.
  • Identify, develop, and drive cross-sell opportunities across the BSI Europe Financial Lines product suite in collaboration with coverholders, brokers, and the wider underwriting team.
  • Adhere to Lloyd’s delegated authority compliance requirements and ensure all delegated arrangements comply with internal risk management frameworks.
  • May be responsible for peer reviewing the work of others, including referral decisions and governance documentation.
  • Understand, embrace, and execute Travelers’ underwriting strategies and principles to produce budgeted results.
  • Demonstrate superior customer service standards — consistency, responsiveness, and product knowledge — in line with Travelers’ service expectations.
  • Actively engage in and seek out training and development opportunities to further build technical underwriting expertise across the BSI Europe Financial Lines suite and the delegated underwriting market.
  • Work effectively as a productive and supportive team member in conjunction with colleagues, supporting business unit and company objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Working knowledge of the delegated underwriting market, including coverholder and MGA structures within the Lloyd’s market, and an understanding of the regulatory obligations applicable to delegated arrangements.
  • Working knowledge of Lloyd’s delegated authority frameworks, Minimum Standards, DDM reporting, and associated FCA/regulatory requirements.
  • Strong technical knowledge of two or more BSI Europe Financial Lines products — Management Liability, Professional Indemnity (PI), Cyber, or Transactional Liability — in a European context.
  • Demonstrates an ability and desire to learn about the enterprise and business unit critical issues and financial drivers.
  • General knowledge of organisational and regulatory rules, policies, and procedures, effectively employed in day-to-day work activities.
  • Intermediate to advanced analytical thinking and financial acumen, with the ability to interpret bordereaux data, portfolio performance metrics, and loss trends to drive decision-making.
  • Identifies current or future problems or opportunities, analyses and synthesises information to understand issues, explores alternatives, and supports sound underwriting and business decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to influence and engage coverholder partners, brokers, and senior internal stakeholders.
  • Intermediate relationship management: seeks out, builds, fosters, and maintains productive relationships and alliances to meet goals and achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrates basic ability in the areas of customer focus and positive broker interaction.
  • Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualification (or working towards).

What is a Must Have?

  • Previous experience of underwriting in management liability, professional indemnity, cyber, transactional liability, or related financial lines products, gained in either a direct or delegated authority capacity.
