About the role:

The Senior Analyst, Commercial Specialized Financing is responsible for evaluating Mortgage Investment Corporation (MIC) and related investment proposals, providing well-supported recommendations that manage risk and ensure regulatory compliance. The role also supports the development and maintenance of strong client relationships to deliver tailored financing solutions.

  • Assist the VP in analyzing investment proposals and preparing decision-ready written recommendations in Term Sheet format, in accordance with Fairstone Bank’s policies, guidelines, and overall investment criteria.
  • Support the structuring and evaluation of specialized financing transactions for Mortgage Investment Corporations (MICs) and other mortgage fund-related borrowers.
  • Coordinate the collection, review, and presentation of due diligence materials to facilitate timely and high-quality credit decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with the Underwriting team to ensure service standards are met and funding timelines align with client expectations.
  • Apply consistent, objective, and sound risk assessments in a high-volume, quality-driven environment.
  • Support the achievement of Commercial Specialized Financing business objectives, including new business volume, spread, and profitability targets.
  • Maintain strong awareness of industry developments, competitive dynamics, and market trends.
  • Support the VP in developing and maintaining the Specialized Financing pipeline to enable efficient workflow and timely loan approvals.
  • Prepare and deliver accurate, insightful reporting to Management on the portfolio, pipeline, market trends, competitive landscape, and cost of funds, including ad-hoc reporting as required.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, including ERM, Finance, Treasury, Compliance, and Securitization, to support Commercial-related initiatives and ensure effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Review and assess documentation submitted by clients and brokers to confirm authenticity and ensure compliance with Fairstone Bank policies, delegated authority limits, and applicable regulatory requirements, including Commercial Underwriting Policies, Commercial Lending Guidelines, Privacy legislation, Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing regulations, and internal Anti-Fraud protocols.
  • File Unusual Transaction Reports, as required, in fulfillment of individual obligations to identify, detect, and deter potential financial crime.
  • Support the maintenance of clean OSFI and Internal Audit outcomes for Commercial Originations.
  • Support special projects and other initiatives, as required.

What we’re looking for:

  • University degree in finance, economics, accounting, business, real estate, or related field.
  • Professional accreditation(s) or progress toward certification considered an asset (e.g., MBA, CFA, CBV, CPA).
  • 3-5 years of experience in commercial banking, real estate finance, credit, underwriting, or investment analysis.
  • Experience in alternative lending is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of commercial real estate and mortgage lending principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a team-oriented setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of professionalism and judgment.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, time-management, and attention-to-detail skills, with the ability to work effectively within established guidelines.
  • Solid understanding of credit risk assessment and lending principles.
  • Knowledge of commercial real estate valuation methodologies, including income approach, capitalization rates, discounted cash flow (DCF), and comparable analyses.
  • Strong financial analysis and modeling capabilities, with advanced Excel proficiency.
  • Familiarity with loan structures and applicable regulatory requirements are considered an asset.

What you can expect - pay & process:

  • Expected base salary range is $63,000 - $80,000 per year, plus the opportunity to earn an annual incentive bonus tied to performance.
