The Senior Academic Counselor - Athletics in Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) serves as an academic support counselor for student-athletes. Collaborates and works with colleges in interpreting academic degree progress standards to individual student-athletes. Monitors and records academic progress for assigned student-athletes. Serves as an academic support counselor in SASSO for students-athletes enrolled in their specific colleges. Provides one-on-one academic counseling to individual student-athletes based on their team affiliation and college of enrollment. Partners with the colleges, the University Registrar and individual student-athletes with regard to NCAA, Big Ten and college degree progress eligibility issues including minimum hours, minimum GPA. Provides eligibility checks for all student-athletes on assigned teams. Monitors and checks schedules and grades for progress and eligibility compliance with Big Ten, NCAA, OSU and college rules. Works with college advisors to assist student-athletes regarding University degree programs and requirements, academic standards and general course selection. Represents colleges, their programs, and their degree progress standards in the recruitment and yield processes for student-athletes. Regularly check-in with assigned student-athletes to ensure they are making progress toward their degree. Provide academic updates to assigned coaching staff and Senior Associate Athletic Director/ Executive Director of SASSO.

Senior Academic Counselor is expected to make decisions surrounding academic intervention for student-athlete success. Works collaboratively with academic support staff/learning specialists to execute recovery plans designed to foster academic growth and development for their respective caseload. Serves as extensions of the academic advising offices of the colleges during orientation and scheduling periods. Reviews degree audits, and makes referrals when appropriate. Works with the colleges to clarify issues related to major and college changes and course progress information. Meets with prospective student-athletes and parents during recruitment process to discuss importance of academic performances and progress toward degree. Aid with the admission process for potential student-athletes for assigned sport, including gathering of admission materials and collaborating with coaching staff with assigned compliance representative. Performs transfer evaluations for potential student-athletes to determine academic progress and eligibility status for coaching staff of assigned Varsity Team.

Responsible for compiling and reporting academic updates and/or grade reports to assigned sports team, sport administrator, and direct supervisor. Aid in SASSO initiatives and perform other duties as assigned. Individuals must be ready and well-versed in NCAA rules & regulations, their interpretation & application within the academic support realm. Ability to execute in a fast paced environment while independently representing both the University and Athletics to assigned Varsity teams. Understand and operate under SASSO best practices to ensure academic integrity, transparent communication and student-athlete success. Must possess outstanding communication skills, both oral and written. Occasionally required to work nights and weekends. Abide by FERPA.

Hiring 2 positions - 1 for Olympic sports and 1 for Football/Olympic

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience within the field of athletic academic support is required. Familiarity with NCAA Rules, eligibility, academic advising, and Big Ten Conference Rules. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, including different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Desired:

Master's Degree with 4-8 years of athletic academic support experience is preferred. Demonstrated success working with student-athletes including knowledge of NCAA, Big Ten Conference and OSU rules and regulations is also preferred.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $50,000 - $63,000. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
