Salary Range: $19.33 - $25.12 Per Hour

Job Summary: This position is a Social Services Assistant, GS- 0186-5 to be filled at the following locations: Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Seney, Michigan. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in Marion Illinois.

Major Duties:

  • This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. As a Seasonal - Social Service Assistant your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Coordinates and leads the station's Youth Conservation Corps Program. Provides technical guidance and direction in all phases of each field project to the YCC enrollees. Evaluates proper performance and responds to enrollee's questions about the projects. Assigns duties on a rotating basis to ensure as broad of a range of natural resource experience as possible for each enrollee. Independently provides a sufficient amount of detail to accomplish projects safely and efficiently providing for an adequate amount of time for a quality learning experience.

Qualifications: Only experience and education obtained by 12/12/2025 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-05] One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-04 in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying Specialized Experience include: group leader in a community or residential recreation or training program, youth summer camp counselor, job skills trainer, work that demonstrated the ability to lead and train members of a job crew, group activities leader in the Armed Services, unit leader for a dormitory group in a residential facility, assistant to associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature such as drug/alcohol addiction, or other work directly related to the duties of the position.. OR Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or (c) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. OR A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
