Job Summary: This position is based at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area within the Division of Science and Resource Management. Major Duties:

  • The primary responsibility of this position is to operate small, motorized vessels (up to 32 feet in length) in support of natural and cultural resource management activities on Lake Powell and the Colorado River. Operations may occasionally extend to the San Juan River and other tributaries. Key Duties: Transport personnel, equipment, and contractors to support resource management projects. Perform minor maintenance and basic fleet management tasks. Task include collect and submit monthly boat and vehicle mileage logs, report on vehicle and boat services, and complete budgeting associated with vehicle and boat maintenance. Assist with fieldwork related to natural and cultural resource monitoring and preservation.- Assigned tasks may include use of basic hand tools, which may include shovels, rakes, rock hammers and chisels, brooms, wheelbarrows, brushes, tape measures, fence tools, post hole diggers, vegetation clippers or pruners, chainsaws, operation of a generator, and helping to set up equipment such as screens or nets. Additional Responsibilities: Support preservation efforts by assisting higher-graded staff with masonry and restoration work. Tasks may include mixing amended and unamended mortars, applying mortar using re-pointing techniques, and resetting loose or damaged stones in both dry-laid and wet-laid masonry structures. Flying as a passenger in a small aircraft including helicopters, riding as a passenger in motorized boats and rafts, and operating 4-wheel drive vehicles are sometimes required. Area and Housing Information: This position is in Page, Arizona at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on the Arizona-Utah border. Page overlooks beautiful Lake Powell which offers a variety of water sports including boating, fishing, and river running on the Colorado River above and below Lake Powell. The surrounding land is beautiful red rock country perfect for hiking, hunting, and backcountry activities. Page is at the hub of the Grand Circle which contains America's largest concentration of national parks and monuments, such as, Grand Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and the Flagstaff Area Monuments. Page offers normal small community amenities such as an airport, shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12, and college courses available through the local Community College. The elevation is 4300 feet with high-desert sunny days, cool nights, and low humidity. Home purchases are available in the area. Government housing may be available by a bid process.

Examples of experience include: operating small craft (primarily of 15ft to 26ft, but occasionally as small as 11ft, and up to 32ft in length) to transport personnel and supplies; operating on mostly protected waters, in situations of moderate small craft traffic, and limited large vessel traffic; applying basic rules of the road in operation; docking and undocking; and wind/weather conditions; explaining and enforcing safety regulations among passengers; interpreting and applying local charts; plotting compass courses; performing operator maintenance and repairs such as cleaning, changing oil, making minor adjustments, and recognizing improper operation or function to secure repair, etc.; modifying or cancelling trips due to severe weather conditions.
