Job Summary: This position is located in Independence National Historical Park within the interpretation division. The primary purpose of this position is interpretation, delivering meaningful visitor experiences, supporting education and safety, and protecting natural and cultural resources. Typical entry on duty is Apr-May (may vary due to weather, project needs, or funding). Anticipated start: May 2026.

Major Duties:

  • Develop and deliver engaging interpretive programs (talks, tours, and digital content) for diverse audiences using a variety of techniques and media. Conduct research and synthesize information to provide accurate, relevant, and inclusive interpretation of park resources. Plan, create, and evaluate interpretive materials and programs to support park goals and improve visitor experiences. Coordinate visitor services operations, provide information, and respond to public inquiries to ensure high-quality service. Train, mentor, and collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partners while supporting safety, resource protection, and visitor compliance. Note: In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189, "Celebrating America's 250th Birthday," and EO 14314, "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving Our National Parks," the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) approved an exception to the 1,039-hour limit for this position, extending the maximum to 1,560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/30/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative or scientific work; fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work." You must include hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation (Major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.). You must include transcripts. -OR- Equivalent combination of education and specialized experience. To combine education and experience take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a masters degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
