Job Summary: The Pacific West Region is recruiting for summer seasonal Seasonal Park Ranger (General), GS-0025-9 positions intended to assist permanent staff with visitor and resource protection work. Major Duties:

  • The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Kalaupapa National Historical Park: Hawaii DUTIES: Assists in leadership roles in all hazard incidents that may include emergency medical incidents, search, and rescue (SAR) operations, hazardous material spills, floods, and natural disasters and wildland fires in or adjacent to the park. Searches and rescues may result in body recoveries for lost, injured, and deceased visitors and conducted in remote and technical terrain and at any time of day or night including local community members who may participate during emergencies to include technical rope rescue, carry-out techniques, land search, and Swiftwater search and rescue. Performs complex emergency medical services (EMS), search and rescue activities on land and water in remote and challenging conditions. Serves as the subject-matter-expert on topics of motorized boat operations, whitewater stream patrols, emergency medical services, SAR, and the Incident Command System. Analyzes emergency situations for most effective, expedient, safe and cost-conscious approach, develops, maintains, and implements emergency operations plan and operational preparedness for the district. Maintains training logs for each ranger or community team member, documenting SAR and EMS evolutions and equipment use, and keeping the Park SAR coordinator aware of training needs and deficiencies (to meet the national standard requirements). Purchases, inventories, maintains all emergency equipment in a ready state to include fully outfitting the park EMS and SAR. Includes ordering EMS, boating and technical rescue equipment and coordinating group purchases of equipment. Rangers are always responsible for monitoring and reporting on the condition of the resources of the park such as observing or identifying park resource problems or potential problem situations. Facilitates and performs safety inspections throughout the district to include buildings, fire extinguishers, emergency equipment, motor vehicles etc. Physical Demands: The work is mostly outdoor work and involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, resource equipment, or other loads. This work involves extensive search and rescue, EMS, hiking, backpacking and firefighting in remote and mountainous terrain. Requires other similar strenuous activities, often lifting or carrying equipment weighing more than 50 pounds, over long rugged distances, walking and/or hiking distances up to 10 miles a day, working at night; all of this may at times be in inclement weather conditions. This position requires being physically fit and meeting fitness requirements on a continuing basis. Work Environment: The incumbent will work in various environments from office buildings to the forest, streams, trails and peaks, coast, and crater. The Incumbent is subjected to bad weather, insects, and other discomforts and, in some cases, hazards of rough terrain or water conditions. In the field the employee may be exposed to hot dry conditions, storms, severe cold, and wet and windy weather. There is a potential for exposure to being immersed in water, falls, slips on steep slopes. During emergencies and all hazard operations, the work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods of time without rest. Incumbents engaged in all-hazard operations are frequently exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations which require a range of safety and other precautions. However, by following safety regulations these falls are minimized. Prolonged periods of rigorous physical exertion are required when hiking trails, and responding to search and rescue, or other emergency situations. The employee uses a variety of personal protective equipment. Incumbent presentations may be given indoors, in visitor centers, school classrooms or community centers or outdoors where conditions can be steep and slippery.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by 11:59 EST when the applicant cut-off is reached (which may be sooner than 01/20/2026. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR: You must possess a CURRENT Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher-level certification, through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, or state equivalent with the ability to obtain a National Registry Certification. YOU MUST UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR EMT CERTIFICATION AT TIME OF APPLICATION. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes activities such as 1) coordinating, leading and directing emergency services operations and activities; (2) assisting with developing long-range emergency program plans; (3) developing educational or interpretive programs related to emergency services; (4) initiates, plans, and coordinates search and rescue operations or remote emergency services operations. You must include hours per week worked in your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education OR a master's/equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You must include college transcripts if you plan on qualifying based on education. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above that when combined equals at least 100% of the minimum qualification requirement for the GS-09 level. NOTE: Only progressive graduate education beyond the first year is credible when combining. You must include college transcripts if you plan on qualifying based on the combination. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
