Position Summary

The Department of Community Services, Facility, Operations & Environment Division is accepting applications for the role of Seasonal Arborist.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations - Forestry, the Seasonal Arborist supports daily activities of operational services within the division. The Seasonal Arborist will perform a variety of operational tasks to support urban forestry while ensuring they are meeting service levels and following all safety standards.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Performs woodlot, park and street tree management activities

  • Performs arboriculture work, including pruning, rigging, removals and cabling according to current policies and procedures and accepted industry practice(s)

  • Operates specialized equipment such as chippers, chain saws, and stumpers where required in a safe and efficient manner

  • Creates and maintains records as required, including but not limited to, Urban Forestry site work safety plans (tailboards), traffic control plans (Book 7) and three maintenance work records for all projects, daily

  • Complies with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act

  • Perform all other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives

  • Perform pre and post audits of all equipment utilized

  • Complete equipment work order forms as required

  • Responds to customer inquiries according to established procedures and approved decision-making framework

  • Maintains ongoing communication with internal staff and contractors to maintain a high level of efficiency and service

Education & Experience

  • 1 year Post Secondary Diploma in Urban Forestry Arboriculture Program

  • Post-secondary education parks or maintenance or related field and/or combination of relevant post secondary education and related experience is an asset

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in municipal public works or parks and/or other relevant and/or equivalent experience

  • Two (2) years of experience in municipal forestry operations is an asset

Certifications and Designations

  • Possession of a class “G” Ontario Driver’s license is required. The successful candidate must have a clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver’s abstract dated within 30 days will be required if selected for an interview. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply

  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate / CPR and WHMIS would be considered an asset

Additional Skills

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are required

  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills are an asset

  • Mechanical aptitude to operate relevant equipment

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Working knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations, i.e. Ontario Health & Safety Act (OHSA)

  • Ability to use heavy tools and lift or move moderately heavy objects (up to 50lbs)

  • Able to work outside in inclement weather

Hourly Rate: $26.40 - $28.51
