Job Summary: This WG-5803-10 Seasonal Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic is located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. This is a Temporary, Seasonal appointment not to exceed 1,039 hours. Anticipated Entry on Duty (EOD): May 4th, 2026.

Major Duties:

  • Perform Repairs and Overhauls on Heavy Mobile Equipment: Carry out troubleshooting, repair, and reassembly of major components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, braking systems, and powertrain assemblies with minimal supervision. Diagnose Mechanical, Electrical, and Hydraulic Malfunctions: Use technical practices, test equipment (oscilloscopes, compression gauges, computer analyzers), and visual/auditory indicators to identify issues and determine the extent of required repairs. Interpret Technical Manuals, Schematics, and Specifications: Read and apply technical diagrams, service manuals, and specifications to correctly measure, fit, install, and adjust parts and systems. Operate, Inspect, and Service Heavy Equipment: Operate a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment; perform safety inspections, servicing, and fueling prior to operation to ensure equipment readiness. Use and Maintain Tools and Test Instruments: Utilize hand tools, power tools, torque tools, and diagnostic instruments to repair, or rebuild vehicle systems while maintaining tools in safe working condition. Troubleshoot, Prioritize, and Complete Work Orders Independently: Perform repairs through work order systems, determine repair priorities based on equipment condition and mission needs, and complete tasks thoroughly with minimal return work or oversight. Physical Demands: Physical effort is active, requiring walking, standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds) stooping, and working in cramped positions. Occasionally strenuous physical effort is exerted in climbing and carrying hand tools and in the repair of powered equipment. Working Conditions: Works in areas that are frequently dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gases and fumes that could result in burns, infections, and cuts. Works indoors and outdoors and must be capable of working satisfactorily in adverse conditions of rain, snow, and in high insect density.

Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must (1) meet the Selective Factor AND (2) you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the job-related factors listed below. SELECTIVE FACTOR: You must possess and maintain a current, valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class A. You are required to upload a copy of your CDL (both front and back) at the time of application. -AND- To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): Experience performing common tasks under general direction in a full automotive service shop on heavy trucks, equipment, and automotive vehicles. Resume should demonstrate you have performed most or all of the following: replaced spark plugs, replaced water hoses and installed water pumps; replaced brake pads, replaced accessory belts and changed the oil on gas and diesel engines. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Trouble shooting Use of Measuring Instructions If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
