Salary Range: $21.85 - $43.04 Per Hour

Job Summary: Open to the first 350 applicants, or until 12/12/2025, whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration. These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Selectees may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Positions and grade levels may not be filled at every duty station.

Major Duties:

  • The parks and duty stations hiring for these positions are below, as is each park's anticipated seasonal period. The typical seasonal period may vary during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Denali National Park & Preserve (Denali Park): May - September Lake Clark National Park & Preserve (Port Alsworth): May - October Southwest Alaska Network (Anchorage): May - October Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve (Copper Center): May - September Work includes, but is not limited to the following: Performs technician work that is supportive of professionals in resource management (i.e. Biologists, Ecologists, etc.). These positions participate in resource management tasks associated with a variety of emphasis areas, such as vegetation management, wildlife management, fisheries, and/or habitat management. Specific duties will vary by park location but may include collecting data on wildlife, fish, plants, vehicle traffic from monitoring locations, etc. Implements natural resource management projects following established procedures. Collects field data, ensuring quality control of data or collected samples. Provides assessment and classification of data. Uses a wide variety of equipment and techniques, such as binoculars, hand-held Juno GPS units, range finders, spotting scopes, traffic counters, seines, hoop nets, gill nets, radio telemetry, etc., to carry out resource management projects. Maintains monitoring equipment. Uses a variety of computer programs, such as MS Excel, MS Access, ArcMap, ArcGIS, or comparable software to retrieve, download, process, store, and track resource management information. Additional duties at the GS-05, GS-07, and GS-09 levels: Troubleshoots natural resource field equipment. Performs literature research for natural resource studies. Additional duties at the GS-07 and GS-09 levels: Evaluates natural resource quality assurance compliance. Organizes, summarizes, and reports on natural resource data. Assists in the preparation of plans and guidelines related to resource management projects. Additional duties at the GS-09 level: Independently resolve problems for which precedents exist; select from several alternatives, the most appropriate course of action for planning and executing work; and apply a wide range of conventional methods and solutions to new situations. This position directly affects the design, operation, and adequacy of natural resource activities. Physical Demands: The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect and/or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to handle wild animals, prepare soil for planting, to scuba dive or operate a boat. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment packs weighing up to 50 pounds, must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles in a day. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Working Conditions: The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Employees are required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves. Government housing is available at Port Alsworth. It may be available at Denali Park and Copper Center. Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess one of the following qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 level in the federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector) for a total of one year of experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is experience such as working in a nursery that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; working in an environment comparable to a large farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern industry practice; taking and recording scientific measures; or assisting with research activities or field investigations related to the biological sciences. (Excess specialized experience can be substituted for general experience, but excess general experience cannot be substituted for specialized experience.) -OR- EDUCATION: At least two years of education above high school (60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or equivalent) which included at least 12 semester hours, 18 quarter hours, or equivalent, in any combination of scientific or technical courses, such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours, 9 quarter hours, or equivalent, must be directly related to the position. Examples of directly related studies include wildlife biology, wildlife management, marine biology, oceanography, marine resources, fisheries science, plant science, botany, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy, and ecology. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: To combine education and experience, first take the number of credit hours earned and divide by 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the number your school uses to represent one year of full-time study. Then take the number of months of qualifying experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For example: I have six months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), plus 30 semester hours of undergraduate level coursework (50% of the education requirement), which includes at least 3 semester hours of study that is directly related to the position. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector). Examples of specialized experience include assisting in natural resource inventory and monitoring studies; maintaining and repairing natural resource field equipment; and documenting natural resource survey results. -OR- EDUCATION: At least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours, 180 quarter hours, or equivalent) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours, 36 quarter hours, or equivalent, in any combination of scientific or technical courses, such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics. At least 6 semester hours, 9 quarter hours, or equivalent, must be directly related to the position. Examples of directly related studies include wildlife biology, wildlife management, marine biology, oceanography, marine resources, fisheries science, plant science, botany, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy, and ecology. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: To combine education and experience, first divide your number of credit hours earned that are in excess of 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or equivalent, by 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the number your school uses to represent one year of full-time study. Examples of directly related studies include wildlife biology, wildlife management, marine biology, oceanography, marine resources, fisheries science, plant science, botany, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy, and ecology. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: To combine education and experience, first divide your number of credit hours earned towards a directly related graduate degree by 18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours, or the number your school uses to represent one year of full-time graduate study. Then take the number of months of qualifying experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Examples of specialized experience include conducting and leading natural resource inventory and monitoring studies; utilizing a computer database to manage and analyze collected biological data; leading crews executing natural resource field work; and recommending solutions for solving natural resource management issues. -OR- EDUCATION: At least two full years (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours, or equivalent) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. Examples of directly related studies include wildlife biology, wildlife management, marine biology, oceanography, marine resources, fisheries science, plant science, botany, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy, and ecology. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: To combine education and experience, first divide your number of credit hours earned towards a directly related graduate degree that are in excess of 18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours, or equivalent, by 18 semester hours, 27 quarters hours, or the number your school uses to represent one year of full-time graduate study.
