Job Summary: This position is a Biological Science Technician (Avian), GS- 0404-6. Cost of Living Allowance: In addition to the yearly salary, this position is entitled to a 1.49% cost-of-living allowance (COLA). This allowance is subject to annual review, adjustment, and rate decrease.

Major Duties:

  • This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. As a Seasonal - Biological Science Technician (Avian) your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Responsible for leading and operating a field camp for extended time frames, including logistics, developing work plans/schedules, providing instruction, and working with others. Leads a group of lower graded technicians in gathering field data and provides necessary training in techniques and procedures. Makes recommendations for improvements in methods and procedures. Conducts surveys to collect and analyze various types of information on bird populations such as habitat use, sex and age structure, seasonal movement, and foraging ecology data, behavioral data, population abundance, and harvest characteristics. Makes preliminary assessment of such things as habitat preference and population dynamics. makes preliminary determinations of the cause of problems noted, e.g., drought, overpopulation, or toxins. Assists in the development of plans and guidelines by collecting and compiling specified data. May present and/or prepare environmental educational material of limited difficulty. Collects avian morphometric data, mark/recapture data, and biological samples by capturing, measuring, marking and collecting biological samples from waterfowl. Uses traps and nets to capture waterfowl species for study measurement and banding. Operates a variety of field equipment including, generators, radios, radio tracking equipment, handheld GPS units, satellite phones, firearms, cars and trucks, and cameras. Uses computer to enter, tabulate, manage, analyze basic data on avian populations without direct daily supervision.

Qualifications: A selectee receiving a temporary appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected and are not entitled to within grade increases. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Only experience and education obtained by 12/12/2025 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-06] One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-05 in the Federal service. Experience may include conducting vegetation studies; apply herbicides; conduct surveys of wildlife and/or waterfowl; capture, handle, and tag a variety of wildlife; use various computer software to enter biological data into existing databases; gather biological data, evaluate data and present findings in report form. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
