Scientist II – Technical Support

As QuidelOrtho continues to grow, we are seeking to appoint a Scientist II – Technical Support to join our Troubleshooting department in Pencoed on an 18-month fixed-term contract. This role will work a day shift working one Saturday per month.

About QuidelOrtho, Pencoed

QuidelOrtho has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 600 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to sites across the globe.

Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunohematology products used in transfusion medicine; in addition to a large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories.

Your New Role

Reporting to the Technical Lead, you will provide technical oversight for investigations and strategic projects. You will analyse complex scientific data, present findings to stakeholders, and ensure all work meets rigorous quality, safety, and compliance standards.

This is a high-visibility role where you will bridge the gap between manufacturing and technical design, helping us save and improve lives through better diagnostics.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Technical Leadership: Lead day-to-day investigations into non-conformances and root causes to support process improvements.
  • Project Oversight: Drive long-term projects (e.g., CAPA implementations, Cost Improvements) and support the smooth transition of New Product Introductions.
  • Data Analysis: Interpret complex scientific data using statistical tools (e.g., Minitab) and present findings/recommendations to the wider business.
  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure all projects adhere to GLP, GDP, and EHS standards, maintaining meticulous quality documentation and change notices.
  • Lab Operations: While primarily data and project-driven, you will conduct scientific lab operations (IA/IH).
  • Continuous Improvement: Propose and implement innovative ideas to increase team efficiency and manufacturing consistency across wells, conjugates, and buffers.
  • This role is primarily office/desk-based, with lab work required approximately 5-10% of the time.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Education: A degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent professional experience.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in data manipulation and statistical software (Minitab or equivalent). Strong fundamental knowledge of Immunoassay (IA) or Immunohematology (IH) principles.
  • Analytical Mindset: Proven ability to perform root-cause analysis and translate data into actionable business conclusions.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to present technical data to diverse audiences.
  • Adaptability: A "can-do" attitude with the ability to manage shifting priorities and work effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams.
  • Planning: Strong organizational skills to meet fixed timelines in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
