SCIENTIST

GDIT’s Science & Engineering group has an immediate position for a qualified candidate to provide scientific and technical support to environmental monitoring projects and special studies for EPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO). This full-time position is located onsite at GDIT’s Falls Church office (3170 Fairview Park Drive); however, teleworking may be considered, and travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise, data management, data quality assessment, and quality assurance

support to environmental monitoring and remediation projects.

  • Review physical, chemical and biological data generated from Great Lakes monitoring programs and sediment investigations.  Ensure data meet standards listed in plans, standard operating procedures and EPA environmental methods and assign data qualifiers as needed.
  • Assist with planning, implementation, documentation and reporting on environmental monitoring with a focus on water quality, biological monitoring, and coastal wetlands.
  • Accurately manage analytical and field data and coordinate with data managers to process electronic data deliverables.
  • Assemble sampling kits for fish sampling and assist with shipping them to samplers.
  • Write and review technical reports, quality assurance project plans, sampling designs, and SOPs
  • Interface with environmental scientists, IT staff and other technical personnel to develop tools and applications to support environmental monitoring data collection, assessment, analysis and
  • Serve as chemical hygiene officer onboard a Great Lakes research vessel and support monitoring activities onboard the vessel. Responsible for safety of scientists and crew and for ensuring all laboratory and ship operations are performed in accordance with health and safety regulations. Specific tasks may include conducting inspections, water sampling, monitoring various sampling and work activities, providing guidance to ensure safe work practices, overseeing chemical handling and storage, and implementing emergency procedures related to hazardous chemicals.

Qualifications (Required Experience and Skills)

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years professional experience or Master’s degree and professional experience related to Chemistry
  • Experience in environmental monitoring and assessment, field data collection, and laboratory analyses
    • Lab safety experience
    • Experience using MS Access
    • Effective communication skills to interact with team members
    • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and creative thinking skills
    • Excellent technical writing capabilities
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and switch between tasks quickly
    • Willingness to travel
    • Familiarity with water quality monitoring is a plus

The likely salary range for this position is $69,264 - $80,500. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
