Overview

Axle is seeking a Scientific Communications Specialist / Technical Writer. This role focuses on translating complex biomedical research into clear, engaging, and business-friendly content for external audiences. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between scientific discovery and commercialization by developing materials that support technology marketing, partnership development, and technology transfer initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate complex scientific and technical information into clear, concise, and plain-language content for non-scientific and business audiences
  • Develop technology summaries, marketing abstracts, and partnership-focused materials to support licensing and commercialization efforts
  • Write and edit content for:
    • Newsletters 
    • Annual reports
    • Scientific and business journals
    • Technology transfer success stories
  • Create external-facing communications materials, including:
    • Slide presentations
    • Figures, graphics, and visual content
    • Website and digital content
  • Support development of technology transfer narratives that position innovations for industry and commercial partners
  • Collaborate with scientists, business development teams, and communications offices to gather and synthesize information
  • Assist in preparing:
    • Award nominations
    • Reports and briefing materials
    • Background research and reference documents
  • Develop and maintain social media and outreach content (e.g., LinkedIn, web platforms)
  • Support webinars, presentations, and promotional materials for scientific and industry audiences
  • Work independently to manage writing projects from concept to final deliverable
Required Qualifications
  • Candidates must submit 2–3 writing samples demonstrating the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, plain-language content for non-scientific audiences.
  • Master’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in technical or scientific writing in plain language
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in scientific business communications, technology transfer, or commercialization-focused writing
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging content for non-technical audiences
  • Experience producing external-facing materials, such as:
    • Technology summaries
    • Marketing or business abstracts
    • Newsletters or reports
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Familiarity with collaboration tools (e.g., SharePoint, Teams)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting technology transfer, licensing, or commercialization efforts
  • Experience writing for industry, business development, or external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with NIH or federal research environments
  • Experience with web-based content, social media outreach, or digital communications
  • Ability to create visual content (slides, infographics, or figures)

This role has a market-competitive salary with an anticipated base compensation range listed below. Actual salaries will vary depending on a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and location.

$55$65 USD
