Job Description:

A school social worker at Parker Performing Arts School will serve students in grades K-8 providing direct and indirect social work services to students experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school, and facilitates communication among school, home and community providers. Working as a part of a team with school staff, parents and the community to create a caring, supportive climate and atmosphere whereby students can achieve academic success. An understanding of unique and diverse challenges, both personally and developmentally that impact academic achievement of elementary and middle school students is essential. A school social worker develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele. Candidates will have an understanding and the empathy necessary for working with students and their families.

Position Specific Information (if Applicable):

Duties and Responsibilities:  

● Provides direct and indirect school social work services as specified in students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

● Works collaboratively with special education staff in designing and implementing social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction as is appropriate to addressing students’ special education needs.

● Conducts social/developmental assessments of students referred for special education, assists in determining eligibility for special education.

● Deliver counseling services through classroom guidance lessons, small groups and individual counseling for general education students.

● Maintain community partnerships to support students and their families.

● Encourage two-way communication to enhance and promote the school mental health program.  Provide information to students and parents regarding community resources, etc.

● Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.

● Use available technology resources to enhance the school mental health practice and program.

● Customize social work services to meet individual student and school needs. Counsel individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social or behavioral problems affecting their education.

● Work collaboratively within the school environment and with appropriate stakeholders to advance the goals of the Mental Health Program.

● Developing and providing crisis intervention strategies to improve student success

● Working to maximize coping skills for general education students in difficult situations

● Provides short-term individual or group counseling to both general education and special education students to assist during transitions and other high-stress situations.  

● Refer and connect students to appropriate resources to enhance learning, development and social emotional needs.

● Demonstrate age-appropriate counseling practices that meet academic and personal/social needs.

● Support students in the successful transition from each grade level into the next phase.

● Collaborate with the school psychologist to complete functional behavioral assessments (FBA) and support teachers in implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIP).  

● Complete and maintain all school and district required training for school social workers.  

● Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

● Special Services Provider License - School Social Worker - Colorado Department of Education (Social workers not currently licensed by CDE should consider applying)

● Master’s Degree: Social Work

● Colorado First Aide/CPR Certification (within three months of hire)

Preferred Qualifications:

● Passion for the arts in education.

● Experience in developing and implementing organizational mental health systems.

● Experience in charter schools.

● LCSW or Clinical Experience

  • All salary amounts listed above are based on a full-time (1.0) FTE. If applicable, part-time salaries will be prorated according to the assigned FTE.
