We are seeking an experienced Safety Superintendent to lead site safety performance at our large scale open cut coal operation.
Reporting to the HST Manager, this role provides strategic and operational safety leadership, ensuring compliance with Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act (CMSHA) and fostering a strong, visible safety culture across mining, CHPP, maintenance, and contractor workforces.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strong, visible safety leadership across all departments
Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the site Safety Management System (SMS)
Ensure compliance with QLD coal mining legislation, standards, and site SHMS
Drive risk management processes including:
Principal hazard management plans
Bowtie and critical control verification
ICAM / incident investigations
Partner with operational leaders to embed safety into production planning and execution
Lead and mentor the site safety team
Manage statutory reporting, audits, and regulator engagement
Oversee contractor safety performance and compliance
Champion proactive safety initiatives, behavioural safety programs, and workforce engagement
About You
Significant experience in a Safety Superintendent / Safety Manager role within an open cut coal mining operation
Strong working knowledge of:
QLD Coal Mining Safety & Health Act and Regulations
Recognised Standards and Principal Hazard Management
Proven ability to influence leaders and frontline teams
Strong incident investigation and risk management capability
Confident communicator with a practical, collaborative approach
Experience leading safety teams in high-risk operational environments
Qualifications & Requirements
Degree or Diploma in Work Health & Safety (or equivalent)
S1, S2, S3 & G2 (or ability to obtain)
ICAM Lead Investigator (desirable)
Current Queensland Coal Board Medical & Standard 11
