Job Description:
The Opportunity
Hitachi Energy is seeking a Safety by Design Lead to strengthen how safety is systematically built into all HVDC projects. This role can be based in Västerås or Ludvika and offers a unique opportunity to shape how safety is designed, governed, and delivered across a global organization at the forefront of the energy transition.
In this position, you will have end-to-end responsibility for establishing and driving the Safety by Design framework within the HVDC organization. You will ensure that safety requirements are embedded early and consistently throughout the lifecycle—from research and tendering to design, execution, and delivery. By combining strategic leadership with hands-on involvement, you will help ensure that HVDC systems are safe, robust, compliant, and future-ready.
You will act as a central point of contact for Safety by Design, collaborating closely with internal stakeholders such as engineering, quality, operations, supply chain management, and R&D, as well as with customers and external partners. This is a highly influential role with broad visibility, where your work will directly contribute to safer global infrastructure and continuous improvement across the organization.
How you’ll make an impact
- You build trust in Safety by Design as a structured, pragmatic way of working that enables high-quality project execution.
- You ensure safety requirements are clearly defined, understood, and integrated into HVDC designs in line with applicable standards and regulations.
- You lead the development and implementation of governance, methods, KPIs, and best practices related to Safety by Design.
- You support tendering, engineering, and project teams by providing processes, tools, analyses, and data for informed decision-making.
- You facilitate and contribute to safety analyses such as FMECA, HAZOP, STPA, and similar methods.
- You collaborate with Operational Health & Safety experts where responsibilities and topics overlap.
- You coach, train, and mentor colleagues to strengthen safety competence and create a strong, consistent safety culture across programs and projects.
Your background
- You have an engineering degree or equivalent technical competence gained through experience.
- You bring solid experience in organizational transformation, such as introducing new development frameworks, tools, or governance models.
- You have a strong understanding of the safety lifecycle based on at least one major industry standard (e.g. IEC 61508 or similar).
- You can translate complex safety concepts into clear, practical, and scalable processes for large engineering organizations.
- You are comfortable taking ownership—from defining scope and aligning stakeholders to tracking progress and ensuring compliance.
